Providence Bruins News Release
Albany, N.Y. - The Providence Bruins lost to the Albany Devils in a shootout tonight at the Times Union Center, by a final score of 2-1. The regulation P-Bruins goal scorer was Zach Trotman while Seth Griffith scored in the shootout. Niklas Svedberg made 30 saves.
The P-Bruins struggled to find their offensive game early in the first period. Albany took the majority of quali- ty scoring opportunities forcing Svedberg to remain strong in order to prevent the Devils from taking an early lead. Although the Devils came out strong, they failed to play a disciplined game giving the P-Bruins plenty of time on the power play. The P-Bruins finally capitalized on their third man-advantage chance at the 18:45 mark. Matt Fraser won a face-off in the Albany defensive zone with the puck sliding onto the stick of Trotman.
Trotman took a hard wrist shot just below the blue line that sailed cleanly past Devils' goaltender Keith Kinkaid for his eighth goal this season. The P-Bruins took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The P-Bruins carried the momentum into the opening frame of the second period. TheDevils, however, contin- ued to apply offensive pressure, with Svedberg remaining solid to help keep the lead. Albany pummeled the net with great scoring chances, as the P-Bruins struggled to breakout of their defensive zone throughout the last half of the middle frame. The P-Bruins played an organized game within the final minutes of the period and they were able to sustain the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
The P-Bruins and Devils started the third period strong with both teams engaging in intense and physical play. The Devils tied the game at the 3:00 mark, when a bouncing puck trickled out in front of Svedberg. Harri Pesonen found the loose puck and managed to slide it past the glove side of Svedberg for his 14th goal on the season. Teammate Seth Helgeson was awarded the lone assist. The Devils took a late penalty in the final frame and the P-Bruins started the overtime period on the man advantage.
After a scoreless, but exciting overtime period, the teams had to decide the contest in a shootout. The shootout lasted five rounds with the lone P-Bruins goal scorer Seth Griffith managing to get his wrist shot past Kinkaid.
The Devils scored twice with Stefan Matteau notching a goal in the third round and Joe Whitney earning the game-winner with his shootout goal in the fourth round. The final score was 2-1.
The P-Bruins went 1-for-6 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Svedberg blocked 30 of 31 shots while counterpart Kinkaid made 18 saves in the contest.
The Providence Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. to face the Manchester Monarchs. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Team Poster courtesy of University Orthopedics. For tickets to this or any other P-Bruins' home games please visit providencebruins.com.
