November 3, 2011 - NBA G League (G League)
Texas Legends News Release
Frisco, TX NOV. 3, 2011 - The Texas Legends selected Alando Tucker, a 6'6" guard/forward from Wisconsin, with the second overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA Development League Draft. With the fifth overall pick, the Texas Legends drafted 6'11" center, Jamal Sampson from California.
Tucker was the 2007 Big Ten player of the year, and finished his career at Wisconsin as the all-time leading scorer with 2,217 points. The Phoenix Suns drafted Tucker with the 29th pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft. Between 2007 and 2009 Tucker played in 23 NBDL games averaging 26.0 points and 5.8 rebounds.
"I really think Alando is a great player, he just needs the opportunity," said head coach Del Harris. "I believe he's really developing in this league and he'll have another chance in the NBA soon. He's a really good player."
The Legends addressed their void in the middle by drafting Jamal Sampson out of California. Jamal, the cousin of NBA All-Star Ralph Sampson played a one year for California where he earned Pac-10 All-Freshman honors averaging 6.4 points and 6.5 rebounds in 2002. Sampson was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the second round (47th overall) and played five seasons with five different teams.
"We lost a lot of the size we had last year, so getting a big-man was at the top of our list," said assistant coach David Wesley. "Jamal is a fantastic big who can rebound and defend. We're excited to have an anchor in the middle with Jamal."
