D-Fenders Select Jamaal Tinsley With First Pick of 2011 NBA Development League Draft

Published on November 3, 2011 under NBA G League (G League) News Release

NEW YORK, NOV. 3, 2011 - The Los Angeles D-Fenders selected Jamaal Tinsley, a 6-3 guard from Iowa State and eight-year NBA veteran, with the first overall pick of the 2011 NBA Development League Draft Powered by Cisco on Thursday night. The Texas Legends drafted Alando Tucker, a 6-6 forward from Wisconsin, with the draft's second overall pick, and the Maine Red Claws chose Chris Wright, a 6-8 forward from Dayton, with the third overall selection.

Tinsley was the first-round draft choice (27th overall) of the then-Vancouver Grizzlies in 2001 and last played in the NBA in 2009-10, appearing in 38 games with the Grizzlies. Tucker, a 2007 NBA Draft selection (Phoenix, 29th overall), has played in 51 NBA games for the Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves. Wright was a Third Team All-Atlantic 10 selection as a senior at Dayton while averaging a team-high 13.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

Other notable first-round selections include Jamal Sampson of California, a cousin of 1983 NBA Draft pick (No. 1 overall) Ralph Sampson, who was selected by the Legends with the fifth pick of the first round; Gabe Pruitt, who was selected fourth by the Sioux Falls Skyforce after going to the Boston Celtics (37th overall) in the 2007 Draft (and earning a ring with their 2008 championship team); and Curtis Sumpter, a member of the Bronze-medal winning U.S. team at the 2011 Pan American Games, who was selected by the Tulsa 66ers with the 11th pick of the first round.

There were a total of 18 players selected tonight that participated earlier this year at the Boost Mobile NBA D-League National Tryouts that were held in Chicago, Louisville and Los Angeles. Marshall's Jonathan Thomas was selected by the Springfield Armor becoming the highest-ever tryout player selected in a draft.

With the first pick of the fourth round, the Springfield Armor selected Chris Taft - an All-Big East Honorable Mention forward/center who was a 2005 NBA Draft Selection (42nd overall) by the Golden State Warriors who has appeared in 17 NBA games. Durrell Summers was selected by Maine in the second round and was named Most Outstanding Player in 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional as a junior.

Complete rosters for each of the 16 2011-12 NBA D-League teams will be comprised of the players drafted on Thursday, along with returning, affiliated and local tryout players. Rosters will be reduced from 17 players to opening-day 10-man rosters by Nov. 23 in anticipation of the Nov. 25 tip off of the NBA D-League's 11th season.
