Hershey Bears News Release
The Hershey Bears Hockey Club grabbed four out of six points on the weekend, to move two points away from jumping into the conference's top eight. The Bears and Binghamton Senators battled in a back-and-forth matchup on Friday in the Southern Tier, but the hosts held on for a 4-2 win. Brandon Segal scored two goals in the contest, which helped wipe out 1-0 and 2-1 Binghamton leads. But Shane Prince's goal, which came after a Chris Wideman slap shot hit him up high and deflected past David Leggio, ended up as the fortuitous winner for the Senators. Cole Schneider added an empty-net tally to seal the win.
The Bears' biggest test of the season came on Saturday, when former Bears Andrew Joudrey and Patrick McNeill came to town with the league- leading Springfield Falcons. Ryan Stoa struck first for the Bears, and after Darryl Boyce tied the game, Nicolas Deschamps converted a penalty shot to restore the lead. Once more, Springfield tied the game on a power play goal from Sean Collins, but Segal and Dustin Gazley answered to provide a cushion. Michael Chaput made the game interesting by cutting the Bears' lead to one with three minutes left, but Cameron Schilling's empty- netter secured the victory in the final four seconds.
The Bears wrapped up the weekend at historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on Sunday, and skated away from the beach with a 4-1 win over the Albany Devils. Riley Gill made 29 saves in earning his first AHL victory, while Segal extended his goal-scoring streak to an AHL season- best five games. Jeff Taffe added two power-play points, Casey Wellman and Gazley added goals, and Chay Genoway chipped in two assists.
HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES
SIZZLING SEGAL: RW Brandon Segal motored through another strong weekend, scoring four more goals and adding one assist in the Bears' three games. His goal-scoring streak matches the AHL's longest of 2013- 14 at five games. Segal's point total (11-18-29) is also closing in on a point-per game average, and his January totals (7-5-12 in five games) are a primary reason.
MOST EXCITING PLAY IN HOCKEY: LW Nicolas Deschamps matched Segal's team-leading goal total (11) when he converted a penalty shot in the second period of Saturday's win over Springfield. It was the first successful penalty shot for the Bears since RW Garrett Mitchell beat Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen on November 17, 2012.
NOT GILL-TY: G Riley Gill made his second appearance of the season for the Bears on Sunday against the Albany Devils at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. He made 29 saves on 30 shots in the Bears' 4-1 win, which included stopping all 14 third-period shots from the Devils. Gill was named the game's number one star in picking up his first career AHL victory.
PLAYING WELL AGAIN: RW Casey Wellman became the third Bears player to reach double-digits in goals with his 10th of the season on Sunday against Albany. Wellman also became the fourth Bears player to reach the 20-point plateau. Additionally, in his last two games at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, Wellman has five points (three goals, two assists).
STAR GAZING: RW Dustin Gazley struck in back-to-back games for the Bears on the weekend, netting the game-winner on Saturday vs.
Springfield and scoring the fourth of the team's goals on Sunday at Atlantic City. He has recorded four points (3-1-4) in six games since being summoned from the ECHL's Reading Royals. The Bears won all three games in which Gazley scored.
A LATTA HELP: C Michael Latta returned from NHL recall on Saturday, and immediately helped out - posting two assists and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's win over Springfield, and recording one helper and a plus-1 rating in Sunday's win over Albany.
BEARS BULLETS
- The Bears rank fifth in the AHL in goals per game average (3.17).
