WICHITA, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones (8-14) capitalized on a late error by the Wichita Wingnuts (15-7) to snap a team record eight-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory Saturday night in Wichita, KS.
Aharon Eggleston drew a walk from Jonathan Ellis to begin the game for Kansas City and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Ray Sadler to take an early 1-0 lead. Wichita answered against T.J. Large (2-3) in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at one on an RBI double by Juan Richardson.
The Wingnuts took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI single by Jorge Delgado. In the sixth, Kansas City reclaimed the lead with a two-run frame, starting the attack when Sadler was hit by a pitch with one out. Jonathan Jaspe immediately followed with an RBI double, and scored two batters later on a double by Dwayne White to make the score 3-2.
Ellis left with one out in the seventh having surrendered three runs on six hits. He did not factor into the decision.
Wichita continued to battle against Large, tying the game at three on an RBI single by Thomas Fitzgerald in the bottom of the seventh. Large left after seven innings having allowed three runs on five hits, earning the victory after a two-run eighth inning by the Kansas City offense.
The T-Bones opened the eighth inning against reliever Jared Simon (1-1) with a walk by Sadler. Jaspe attempted to sacrifice the veteran right-fielder to second and reached on a throwing error to put two on with nobody out for Kansas City. Simon gave way to Eric Gilliland after inducing a popout, and the left-hander quickly got the second out of the frame with foul fly to third. Then, after walking Alberto Espinosa, Gilliland surrendered the winning run with a bases-loaded walk to Fernando Garcia. Eggleston followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-3 before Espinosa was cut down at home to end the inning.
Simon was charged with two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning. He took the loss without surrendering a hit.
Jaspe added the sixth and final run with an RBI single in the ninth. Kyle Dahman pitched a scoreless eighth for the T-Bones and Andy Shipman added a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the season.
The rubber match of the three-game series is set for Sunday night as Kansas City sends left-hander Reid Santos (2-2, 5.18) to face right-hander Justin Murray (1-0, 3.00) and the Wingnuts. First pitch is set for 5:05. To catch all the action while the team is on the road, tune in to KUDL Radio Bach 1660 AM or visit the listen live link on www.tbonesbaseball.com
