Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains scored two runs in the first inning and didn't cross home plate again for the rest of the night but it stood up behind a terrific pitching performance by Ryan DiPietro (5-0), as the Captains beat El Paso 2-1 at Fair Grounds Field.

DiPietro fanned seven and walked one, while allowing one run on nine hits. His counterpart, El Paso starter David Whigham (2-3), turned in a complete game, going a season-high eight innings, allowing just two runs on ten hits, striking out six and walking one.

DiPietro has pitched effectively in all five of his starts but unlike his first four, he didn't benefit from strong run support Saturday night. Shreveport-Bossier's scored first when Robert Perry came home on an Andres Rodriguez fielder's choice ground out. Later in the inning, Brian Peterson scored from third before Rodriguez was tagged out between first and second in a run down after trying to steal second base with runners on the corners and two outs.

El Paso finally scored off DiPietro in the sixth on a Manny Mejia RBI single. But with two on and one out, DiPietro got Adam Deleo to foul out to first and Stephen Douglas to ground out to short to end the inning.

A trio of Shreveport-Bossier relievers did their assigned jobs to perfection in the late innings to preserve the 2-1 win. Jake McCarter came on with two outs in the seventh and would get Antoin Gray to fly out. He then struck out Chad Gabriel in the eighth before being lifted for Jameson Maj. Maj retired both batters he faced, getting the heart of the El Paso order, Kyle Nichols and Mejia to ground out and fly out, respectively.

In the ninth, Dan Griffin came on and notched his seventh save and third of the series. Griffin allowed a one-out single to Doulgas but got Martin Parra to hit into a 4-6-3 game ending double play.

Captains right fielder Bryan Sabatella went three-for-three with three singles. Mike Provencher and Brian Peterson also had two-hit nights. El Paso's Douglas was two-for-four with a double, the game's only extra-base hit.

After playing 16 games in 16 days, the Captains rest on Sunday before opening up a three-game home series against the St. Paul Saints. It is the only time the Captains will see the Saints this season. The series opens Monday, June 6 with Jose Cuervo & Maker's Mark Margarita Monday and Ladie's Night, featuring free admission to women 21 and over and half price margaritas and frozen drinks. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
