Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back thanks in large part to starting pitcher Jack Frawley's eight scoreless innings in an 8-0 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes Saturday night at U. S. Steel Yard.
The Goldeyes managed just one runner in scoring position against Frawley (2-2) and the RailCats rookie hurler was outstanding for the second straight start. Frawley surrendered just five hits and struck out five over eight scoreless innings while never facing more than four batters in any inning. Brian Grening preserved the shutout after a scoreless ninth, adding a strikeout in the frame.
The RailCats offense exploded for 16 hits in support of Frawley and shortstop Brad Boyer had a truly impressive day in the box going 4-5 with a pair of singles, a double and a triple while driving in four. Eight of the RailCats in the starting lineup had at least one hit while Toddric Johnson collected three including a double and Mike Massaro, Cristian Guerrero and Brian Kolb each added two base knocks.
The âCats jumped out in front in the second when Boyer led off the with a triple to the gap in left center and scored the game's first run two batters later when Rohde belted a fly ball to the warning track in the left-field corner.
The RailCats tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to grab a three-run lead. Kolb led off the frame with a line drive single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice by Klein. Massaro smacked a single to right to drive in Kolb and give the âCats a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Massaro scored when Guerrero did well to break up a potential double play on a Boyer fielder's choice giving the home team a 3-0 advantage.
Four consecutive singles with one out in the seventh led to three more RailCats runs as Massaro, Guerrero, Boyer and Johnson made it a rough night for Goldeyes reliever William Jackel who allowed three earned runs in 0.1 innings pitched.
The âCats extended the advantage to eight in the home half of the eighth. Kolb and Klein combined for the first run after each belted a double to start the inning. Boyer singled to right a few batters later to drive in Klein and pick up his fourth RBI of the night.
The RailCats look to avenge a series loss in Winnipeg last week with the rubber match tomorrow at U. S. Steel Yard at 2:10 p.m. The âCats send Nolan Nicholson (0-4, 7.94) to the hill and lefty Chris Salamida (2-0, 3.92) gets the nod for Winnipeg.
Sunday is Chicago Baseball Night and the first 1,000 kids entering the ballpark will snag either a blue or black baseball glove courtesy of Niemi Associates. The RailCats will also be raffling off Cubs and White Sox tickets and keeping track of how many raffle tickets are sold to see which squad Northwest Indiana prefers, so come represent for your favorite Chicago major league team by calling 219.882.2255 or visiting www.railcatsbaseball.com to get your tickets now!
