Syracuse Sweeps Gwinnett with 10-6 Win

Syracuse, NY. - The Syracuse Chiefs completed their four-game sweep of the Gwinnett Braves with a 10-6 win Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium.

The loss is the 10th in a row for the G-Braves, putting them in a third-place tie with the Durham Bulls in the International League South standings. The Bulls beat Buffalo 14-10 for their fifth win in a row Monday afternoon on the MLB Network.

The G-Braves started the game hot, as leadoff batter Jose Constanza singled to begin the game and moved to second on a walk by Luis Durango. Tyler Pastornicky followed with a single to center that scored Constanza to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. Durango, who moved to third on the Pastornicky hit, would later score on a groundout to first by Felix Pie for a 2-0 G-Braves lead after one half inning.

But in the bottom of the first, starter Eric Junge walked leadoff batter Corey Brown and gave up a two run homer to the second batter in the order, Erik Komatsu, quickly tying the game, 2-2. Mark Teahen followed with a double to left and would score on a two-out single to left by Jim Negrych, giving the Chiefs a 3-2 lead after one.

The G-Braves tied it in the top of the second as an infield hit and throwing error allowed J.C. Boscan to reach second to begin the inning. A bunt by Junge moved Boscan to third and Durango then tied the game, 3-3, with an RBI sacrifice fly to left.

The Chiefs rebounded again in the bottom of the second with two outs and no one on, Brown and Komatsu struck for back-to-back singles, and a walk to Teahen loaded the bases. Chris Marrero scored both Brown and Komatsu with a single to right as Syracuse retook the lead, 5-3.

The G-Braves added a run in the top of the third as Ernesto Mejia (15) led off with a solo blast, giving him 52 RBI on the season. Gwinnett tied the game, 5-5, in the top of the fifth as Mejia doubled, moved to third on a balk, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Pie.

However, the bottom of the fifth proved disastrous for the G-Braves. Junge gave up back-to-back singles to Marrero and Brett Carroll to lead off the inning. Negrych bunted the ball to the mound, but Junge threw the ball away at third allowing Marrero and Carroll to score. Negrych ended up on second on the play and scored as Koyie Hill singled off G-Braves reliever D.J. Carrasco. Hill would move to third on a single by pinch hitter Zach Duke and score on a groundout to first by Brown, as the Chiefs led 9-5 after five.

The G-Braves added a run in the top of the eighth as Pie and Ruben Gotay led off with back-to-back singles, then Lance Zawadzki drove in Pie with a single to right to make it 9-6.

Junge (L, 8-8) worked four innings as he allowed nine hits, eight runs (six earned), with three walks and four strikeouts. Carrasco pitched two innings and surrendered three hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts. Dusty Hughes pitches a scoreless seventh alongside two strikeouts. Billy Bullock worked the eighth and allowed two hits, one earned run and struck out three.

The Chiefs' Mitch Atkins (W, 6-5) went five innings with seven hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and one strikeout. Jeff Mandel pitched three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run and Christian Garcia closed the game and series out with a scoreless ninth.

At the plate for Gwinnett, Pie and Gotay each went 2-for-3 and Mejia was 2-for-5 with his 15th home run of the year, including his team-leading 52 RBI.

For Syracuse, Teahen was 3-for-3 and Komatsu, Marrero and Negrych each had multiple-hit games as part of the Syracuse 15-hit attack.

The Gwinnett Braves (37-42) move to Rochester, New York for a four-game series against the Empire State Yankees beginning Tuesday. The G-Braves will have right-hander Todd Redmond (6-3, 3.40) on the mound, as he opposes the Yankees right-hander D.J. Mitchell (5-4, 5.74).
