Scott, Bulls Win Slugfest to Sweep Buffalo
June 25, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Bulls earned their first sweep of the season in style on Monday afternoon, as they outslugged the Buffalo Bisons 14-10. Durham put on an offensive show for a national audience on MLB Network, scoring those 14 runs on 18 hits, 11 of them for extra bases. Rehabbing Rays DH Luke Scott went 2-for-3 on the day with 2 home runs and 4 RBI.
It was a slugfest from the beginning, with the Bulls jumping on the board early, scoring a run in the first thanks to back-to-back doubles from Stephen Vogt and Chris Gimenez. Vogt padded the Bulls lead with his 5th HR of the year in the top of the third.
The Bulls took that 3-0 lead into the fourth inning, when both teams went on an offensive rampage. The 4th and 5th innings took an hour and twenty four minutes to play, with the Bisons and Bulls combining to score 17 runs on 19 hits between the two frames. Durham scored six runs in the bottom half of the fifth, tying a season-high. Every Bulls batter in the inning had a hit with the exception of Luke Scott, who hit an RBI sac fly to center. The Bulls finished the inning with a 13-7 lead and despite four Buffalo home runs, the Durham lead was never really challenged.
For good measure, Scott hit his second home run of the day, a solo shot in the bottom of the 7th giving the Bulls the final 14-10 advantage. After grounding out and getting hit by a pitch in his first two rehab at bats, the Rays DH looked like he might be in for a long day before he busted out with the two monster homers. Scott's bat helped Durham secure their fifth victory in a row, extending a season-high win streak.
Both teams combined to use eight pitchers and scored 24 runs on 33 hits, including 17 extra-base hits and 7 home runs. In total, nine different players had multi-hit games and every batter for both teams had a hit with the exception of Buffalo's Val Pascucci.
The Bulls welcome the Syracuse Chiefs to the DBAP for their only visit of the season starting Tuesday night. The Chiefs will send LHP John Lannan (6-6, 4.66) to take on RHP Matt Torra (6-6, 4.70) for Durham. Game time is set for 7:05pm.
