Syracuse Mets News Release
Moosic, PA - The Syracuse Mets ran out of time on Saturday night. With the Mets down, 4-2, in the top of the ninth with Michael Perez at the plate and one out, torrential rain rolled into PNC Field, soaking the field and making it unplayable. The game was called right there, handing the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 4-2 win. The RailRiders have now won three out of the first five games in the week-long, six-game series.
Justin Jarvis made his second start for Syracuse (46-65, 13-24) on Saturday night. Jarvis showed flashes of his tantalizing potential on Saturday night, striking out four batters and only walking one in three and one-thirds total innings of work. However, after two scoreless frames to begin his outing, things began to unravel on Jarvis in the third. With nobody on base and two outs, Franchy Cordero hit yet another solo home run to push the RailRiders to a 1-0 lead. Cordero also slugged two solo home runs in Friday night's game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (53-57, 19-17) tagged Jarvis for two more runs. It just four batters to do it. First, Oswald Peraza singled to start the frame, followed by an Austin Wells RBI double that plated Peraza. After a strikeout produced the first out of the inning, Wells swiped third (his first stolen base in his Triple-A career) and then scored on a wild pitch from Jarvis. Jarvis would be pulled later in the inning, with Sean Reid-Foley coming out of the bullpen and wiggling out of the jam via a strikeout and groundout to eliminate any potential further trouble.
The Mets got on the board in the fourth when Luke Ritter singled with one out, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on José Peraza's two-out RBI double.
In the fifth, Syracuse slimmed their deficit to 3-2 when familiar faces did even more damage. Wyatt Young walked to put a runner on base with one out, moved to third on a Ronny Mauricio double, and then scored on an RBI groundout from Brett Baty. Mauricio now has 11 extra-base hits in 11 games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far this season. Baty has also driven in runs in each of his first games back with the Syracuse Mets this week.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tacked on a sorely needed insurance run in the bottom of the seven. It took three batters to do it. Jake Lamb was hit by a pitch to start the inning, moved to second on a Brandon Lockridge single, and scored on an RBI double from Michael Hermosillo to make it a 4-2 game.
From there, the RailRiders bullpen sealed the deal. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitchers sat down the final 11 Syracuse batters of the ballgame down in order, securing the win for the RailRiders.
Syracuse wraps up its road trip with the sixth game at the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Sunday afternoon. The final game of the series is slated for a 1:05 p.m. start time on Sunday. Right-hander Mike Vasil is expected to start on the mound for the Syracuse Mets.
