Switchbacks Lose to San Antonio FC on Penalties to Exit US Open Cup

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Coming off of the late loss over Oklahoma City Energy FC last weekend in USL play, the Switchbacks were looking to advance to the fourth round of the US Open Cup with a win over San Antonio FC. The first opportunity of the game for either side resulted in a handball called against the Switchbacks in the penalty box and Rafael Castillo scored the resulting penalty kick in just the 8th minute. But the Switchbacks would get back into the game when Suggs whipped in a corner kick that Tobenna Uzo would rise up to score a powerful header for the first Switchbacks goal of his career. One of the last kicks of the first half required Moise Pouaty to make a reaction save to keep the score 1-1.
The second half started with Marty Maybin directing a shot on target but Matt Cardone did well to make the save. The majority of the second half consisted of both teams not wanting to make a mistake, so not very chances were created. The game would remain 1-1 at the end of regular time, which means 30 minutes of extra time was needed to separate the sides.
Extra time was more of the same as the player's legs started to get tired after playing multiple games in a week. In the 110th minute, Jordan Schweitzer beat a couple players and crossed the ball but Pascal Eboussi couldn't turn his shot on goal. The game was still 1-1 after 120 minutes so penalty kicks were necessary to determine the winner. San Antonio FC made every single penalty in route to a 5-3 win over the Switchbacks in the shootout to advance to the fourth round of the US Open Cup.
The Switchbacks return home to face Saint Louis FC in USL action on May 26th at 6:00 PM. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Ziggy Bobblehead courtesy of FOX 21 News. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here . Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 5:00 PM.
