Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - It was déjà vu for the Clinton LumberKings Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field. For the second-straight night, the club entered the ninth inning trailing to the Swing of the Quad Cities, and for the second-straight night a late comeback attempt would fall a run short as the LumberKings lost 5-4.

Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the LumberKings climbed to within one as John Whittleman chopped a two-out single to right field, then came home as Matt Smith delivered another base hit to right off Swing reliever Danny Borne. Closer Brian Stitt was summoned from the bullpen to get the final out. L-Kings second-baseman Jose Vallejo nearly completed the comeback, driving a Stitt pitch towards short right field, but Chad Gabriel made a diving catch to end the threat.

The Swing scored three of their five runs via the longball as All-Stars Bryan Anderson and Randy Roth both powered home runs in the game. Anderson drove a 3-2 pitch from Clinton starter Omar Poveda into the Fullerton Lumber Lounge to open up a 4-0 lead in the sixth. Roth's homer was a mammoth shot that towered over the scoreboard at Alliant Energy Field, an estimated distance of 480 feet. His league-leading 15th home run came off reliever Kevin Altman and gave the Swing a 5-3 lead after eight innings.

Poveda (L, 1-9) failed to make it out of the sixth inning for the second straight game, allowing four runs on nine hits. His three strikeouts was his lowest total since fanning just two back on May 2nd. Swing starter Adam Daniels (W, 4-6) pitched six complete innings, yielding two runs on seven hits while striking out two. Stitt (S, 9) worked to just one batter for the save.

The LumberKings pounded out 12 hits in the losing effort as Whittleman and Smith each tallied 3-for-4 nights. Freddie Thon chipped in two more hits for Clinton, who now falls to 3-3 in the second-half.

The three-game series between Clinton and the Quad Cities ends tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, game time set for 7:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
