Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 27, 2006) "" A two-out single by Stantrel Smith in the top of the eighth inning drove in the game's only run as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (3-3, 34-42) go the best of a pitchers' duel to beat the Burlington Bees (1-5, 36-37) 1-0 at Community Field tonight. The win ends a streak of four straight wins for the Bees against the Kernels and evens this series at a game apiece.
Kernels starter Nick Adenhart (10-2) gave up nine runs in two innings for his only home loss when he faced the Bees at Veterans Memorial Stadium on June 4th. Tonight, he regained his ace form and limited the Bees to three hits and three walks while striking out six in eight innings for his Midwest League-leading tenth win. He faced the minimum through five innings and retired twelve in a row after a second-inning single by Miguel Vega before the Bees mounted a two-out rally in the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but Adenhart got Carlos Arroyo to fly out to left-center to end the threat. The Bees had a man in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings after walks, but couldn't get the runners in.
Bees starter Carlos Rosa was just as brilliant as Adenhart. He allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out a season-high eight through seven innings. Only one ball left the infield through the first three innings against him. Chris Hayes took over for Rosa in the top of the eighth. With one out, Larry Infante, batting .185 for the year, lined a one-out single to left for his second hit of the ballgame. He stole second, went to third on a groundout, and scored on Smith's fisted single into right. Smith was 0-12 with five strikeouts against the Bees this year before delivering that hit. Hayes (2-3) would finish the ninth, but get the loss. Richard Aldridge retired the Bees in order and struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game for his 15th save.
The Bees have been shutout eight times this year and are batting .172 (35-203) in the first six games of the second half. Kernels CF Brad Coon was 0-2 with 2 walks to end his 19-game hitting streak. He ties Randy Roth of the Quad Cities and Jesus Valdez of Peoria for the longest hitting streak in the Midwest League this season. Roth's streak also ended here at Community Field against the Bees on May 12th.
The Bees and Kernels will complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Michael Penn (5-2, 2.55) will start for the Bees against RH Stephen Marek (8-1, 2.14) for the Kernels. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Culver's Kids Eat Free Wednesday. All kids 12 and under will get a coupon for a free hot dog and drink at the game and a coupon for custard at Culvers on Roosevelt. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
