Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (3-3, 38-38) jumped out early against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (1-5, 33-42) racing out to a 4-0 lead and extending it to 8-1, before the Rays came back to make it a ball game with four unanswered in the eighth and ninth innings. The Dragons held on and picked up its sixth straight win over the Rays and third straight over all with an 8-5 win in front of 8,749 at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night.
Dayton picked up three unearned runs in the first inning off Rays starter Matt Walker (LP, 1-2). Walker was facing a bases loaded two out situation in the bottom of the first inning and was poised to get out of the inning, despite walking the bases loaded, when Bobby Mosby's foul pop was dropped by catcher Colt Simmons. The inning was extended and Mosby delivered a two RBI single to center scoring Mike DeJesus and Jay Bruce and the Dragons led 2-0. B.J. Szymanski came home on the play as well, scoring all the way from first base when SWM center fielder Jackson Brennan over ran the ball for an error, allowing Szymanski to advance an extra 90 feet.
Craig Tatum put the Dragons in a good spot in the bottom of the second inning doubling off Walker to lead off the inning. Josh Holden moved Tatum to third where he would jog home from on the DeJesus RBI single to center for a 4-0 Dayton advantage. That would be all that Dayton would get off Walker who despite pitching relatively well, dropped to 0-2 against the Dragons and 1-2 overall. The right hander lasted 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, with four strikeouts and three walks. Out of the four runs Walker allowed only one was earned.
After his shortest start of the season on June 22nd, Carlos Fisher (WP, 7-4) was back to form pitching 5.1 innings of three hit, four K, two walk baseball. Fisher allowed an unearned run as a one out walk and a single and error by Szymanski put Cesar Suarez at third base with one down in the sixth inning. Garrett Groce drove home his first of two runs on the night with an RBI ground out off new Dayton pitcher Rainer Feliz (ND).
First base was the production position for the Dragons on the night as Mosby added a solo homer to lead off the sixth inning to give the Dragons a 5-1. Habelito Hernandez replaced Mosby for defensive purposes in the top half of the seventh inning. In the bottom half of the seventh he drove home two runs with a double to left off Billy Evers (ND) to put the Dragons up 7-1. Eric Eymann made it 8-1 with a RBI double of his own scoring Hernandez from second.
Bo Lanier (ND) allowed a lead off triple in the eighth inning to Jason StClair, who scored on an Alex Jaimeson, ground out to make it an 8-2 ball game. In the ninth inning, Damian Ursin (ND) came in out of the bullpen and faced three hitters without recording an out. Groce hit a laser beam homer over the wall in left for an 8-3 game. Ursin would walk the next two hitters in succession before getting yanked by Manager Billy Gardner. On the night Ursin allowed three earned runs on one hit and two walks in 0.0 innings pitched. Justin Mallett (ND) came on to finish the game off as both of the runners he inherited from Ursin came home to score.
The Dragons wrap up the three-game series against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. RHP Zach Ward (6-0, 2.60 ERA) will get the starting nod for Dayton, while Southwest Michigan counters with LHP Jake McGee (6-5, 2.16 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live beginning with the Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM, and first pitch at 7 PM.
