COMSTOCK PARK - Four consecutive hits gave the Whitecaps a 3-1 lead in the second inning to send West Michigan on the way to a 6-3 victory over South Bend.
The bottom three hitters in the order: Justin Justice, Mike Hernandez and Pedro Cotto had consecutive RBI singles in the second as the âCaps overcame an early deficit and moved in front.
Cotto added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Matt Joyce delivered a sac fly in the fifth as the lead was stretched to 5-1.
Erik Averill pitched 6.2 innings as the Whitecaps starter and allowed all three South Bend runs, including two in the seventh.
Anthony Claggett finished the inning and stranded a pair of Silver Hawks runners on base. Claggett also pitched the eighth and extended his scoreless innings streak to 16.
