Quality effort comes up short
June 27, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza pitched another quality start, but the Kernels offense was lacking as they fell to Burlington 2-1, Monday night at Community Field.
Mendoza pitched eight innings, allowing just three hits and struck out nine as he received a no-decision. The Kernels were kept in check by Burlington starter David Henninger, who scattered five hits over six innings and struck out five Kernels.
Brad Coon extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a 2-4 effort, tying the longest hitting streak in the MWL this season. Brad also stole his league-leading 27th base.
Burlington scored it's first run without the benefit of a hit. A walk, sacrifice bunt, stolen base and groundout put the Bees ahead, 1-0.
The score stayed that way until the top of the 9th when Coon singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Flint Wipke walked and after a Hainley Statia pop-out, there were runners on first and second with one out. Burlington manager Jim Gabella brought in Kraig Schambough to pitch to Jordan Renz. With Renz at the plate, the Kernels tried a double steal. Wipke was thrown out at second as Coon advanced to third.
It looked like the Kernels might be shut out for the tenth time this season, but Burlington catcher Jeff Howell gave up a passed ball to let Coon score the tying run from third.
The Kernels went to their bullpen and brought in Robert Romero. After getting the first batter out, Romero pitched to Howell, who redeemed himself with a triple to center. The next batter, Carlos Arroyo singled to center to score the winning run from third.
Romero (0-3) was tagged with the loss and Schambough (2-2) picked up the win.
The loss drops the Kernels to 2-3 in the second half and 33-42 overall. Burlington improved to 1-4.
The short, 3-game series continues Tuesday night in Burlington as Nick Adenhart (9-2) starts for the Kernels against Carlos Rosa (6-4). Game time is 7 pm.
