Sweeney's game winning single sends Kernels home happy

Matt Sweeney hit a deep single to center field with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in Peter Bourjos from third and give the Kernels a 4-3 win over Wisconsin on Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Sweeney extended his hitting streak to seven games. He was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts prior to his hit in the ninth.

The win improves the Kernels 2007 record to 4-3. Wisconsin falls to 1-6.

Pedro Herrera (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Jeremy Haynes. Haynes gave up eight hits but struck out a season-high 10 Timber Ratters over the five innings he pitched. Kernel pitchers combined struck out 17, also a season high. Natividad Dilone (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Wisconsin

The Kernels also had their running shoes on as they stole six bases in seven attempts as Peter Bourjos led the way with three.

For the third straight game, the Kernels were outhit 11-7, but made the most of their chances. Ryan Mount's double was the only extra base hit for the Kernels. Marco Albano and Hank Conger each had an RBI.

The Kernels head out on the road with four games at South Bend and four games at Great Lakes. After an off day, they start a six game homestand on April 26 with four games against Lansing and two games against Clinton. Sean O'Sullivan will start tomorrow for the Kernels against LHP Shane Dove for the Silver Hawks.
