Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (April 16, 2007) - Harold Mozingo and Yovany Damico combined on a one-hitter as the Burlington Bees (7-2) blanked the Kane County Cougars (1-8) 7-0 at Community Field tonight. The shutout is already the Bees' fourth of the season and the staff limited the Cougars to a total of one run and six hits in sweeping this three game series. The Bees have now won five in a row and are five games over .500 in the first half of the season for the first time as a Kansas City Royals affiliate.
Mozingo (1-1) worked six innings and allowed a total of two baserunners. Jermaine Mitchell had a two-out single in the second that went underneath a diving Marc Maddox at third and Jacob Smith was hit by a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the fifth. Neither left first base. Mozingo struck out five and his six innings pitched matched a career-high. Damico was perfect over the final three innings to earn his first save of the year. He struck out one.
Offensively, the Bees came out swinging against Cougars' starter John Herrera. Alvi Morel led off the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line and went to third when Mitchell mishandled the ball in right. With the infield in, Chris McConnell lined a base hit to right, scoring Morel, and the Bees led 1-0. McConnell would go to second when Haas Pratt lost Herrera's pickoff throw to first in the sun, and went to third when Kurt Mertins reached on a throwing error by Michael Affronit at shortstop after fielding a slow chopper. Maddox then cleared the bases with a three-run homer to right and the Bees had a 4-0 lead in the first four batters of the game. For Maddox, it was his second home run in two days and he now has 10 RBI on the year.
Herrera (0-1) finished off the first without any more runs, but the Bees added to the lead in the third. Maddox led off with a single to left, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored as Jase Turner belted a two-run homer to right-center. Turner added a double later in the game and now has four hits on the year: two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Jason Fernandez took over in the fifth and allowed the Bees' final run. Joe Dickerson led off with a single and walks to Brady Everett and Scott Lucas loaded the bases for O.D. Gonzalez, who drove in Dickerson with a sacrifice fly to right field. Lucas also singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to four games, the team's longest so far this year. Fernandez would pitch a total of 2.2 innings and Ron Madej finished the final inning and a third.
The Bees take to the road for an eight-day trip to Ft. Wayne and Dayton starting tomorrow night at Memorial Stadium in Indiana. LH Ryan DiPietro (0-0, 6.00) will get the start against the Wizards and RH Andy Underwood (1-0, 0.00). The game will start at 5:00 Central time and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 4:40.
