Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities headed into Monday night's game at O'Brien Field having won five of their last six, but could not complete a late comeback in a 3-1 loss to the Peoria Chiefs. The loss marked the first time in four games that the Swing have fallen to Peoria since Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg took over as the manager of the Cubs' affiliate.

Quad Cities (6-5) loaded the bases with just one out in the eighth inning, but stranded all three runners in just their second loss in a week. Peoria (4-5) ended a five-game losing streak with the win, a tailspin that began with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Swing on Thursday at John O'Donnell Stadium.

The Swing were trailing 3-1 in the eighth when they threatened to close the gap. Chiefs reliever Marco Carillo had retired the first seven batters he faced before walking Isa Garcia with one away, and Brandon Buckman followed by ripping a double into the right field corner on the first pitch he saw.

After another walk loaded the bases with just one out, Jose Pina came in for Peoria and closed the door. Mark Shorey worked the count full and fouled off three consecutive pay-off pitches before falling victim to an infield pop out, and Donovan Solano followed with a dribbler back to the mound that the pitcher handled easily. Pina stayed in for the ninth inning to earn the five-out save, his first of the year.

Peoria got on the board first in the third inning, but starter P.J. Walters did well to limit the damage. The Chiefs had the bases loaded with nobody out, but after a sacrifice fly drove home one run Walters induced a double play to get out of the jam. One inning later, though, Yusuf Carter drove a triple to the gap in right-center that allowed Wellington Castillo to score all the way from first. That gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead through four innings of play.

The Swing cut the lead in half in the fifth after Christian Lopez drew a leadoff walk. He was at second with two away when Isa Garcia stepped to the plate, driving a liner into shallow center that brought Lopez home to pull to within 2-1.

The Chiefs added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Johnston slapped a full-count pitch into left field with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two away, Andrew Lopez drove in his second run with a line-drive single into center, extending Peoria's lead to 3-1.

Walters (0-1) took the loss for the Swing despite a solid outing, giving up two runs over five innings and striking out three.

The win went to Al Alburquerque (1-1), who tossed five strong one-run innings just four days after the Swing roughed him up for a loss in his first start of the year.
