LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders entertained a sold-out Independence Day crowd of 10,000 fans at PNC Field on Wednesday night with a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Bisons. The RailRiders have won six of their last seven games, including three straight against the Bisons. Major League rehabber Masahiro Tanaka made the start for the RailRiders, and got into early trouble when he walked the leadoff batter and allowed a two-run home run to Richard Urena to give the Bisons an early 2-0 lead.
The right hander settled after the initial blip, retiring the next 14 batters he faced before a two-out double by Tim Lopes in the fifth inning. Tanaka threw a total of 69 pitches in five innings of work, allowing three hits, striking out four and not allowing a walk. "I think it was good just to go out there and pitch five solid innings," Tanaka said afterward through his interpreter. "I feel there was a little bit of rust, but it was a good five innings."
Stephen Tarpley relieved Tanaka and turned in two innings of one-hit relief to keep the game close, but Buffalo starter Matt Tracy kept the SWB offense quiet in his five innings of work. The RailRiders got on the board in the bottom of the seventh against Bisons reliever Jose Fernandez. Ryan McBroom and Rey Navarro led off with back-to-back singles, and two batters later Zack Zehner collected an RBI single. Francisco Diaz followed with an RBI single to plate Navarro and tie the game at 2-2. After L.J. Mazzilli struck out for the second out of the inning, Tyler Wade smacked a double high off the wall in right field to plate Zehner and Diaz and hand Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 4-2 advantage.
Giovanny Gallegos finished off the game with two scoreless innings of relief, earning his first save of the season.
BUFFALOED THEIR WAY BACK: Over the last 23 games the RailRiders have owned a 16-7 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. After taking both games in their two-game series up in Buffalo, the RailRiders are 5-0-2 in their last seven series. The RailRiders entered the series June 29 against Pawtucket trying to draw themselves back to .500 for the first time since being 19-19 May 17 (Game No. 38). With Wednesday's win, the RailRiders are three games above .500 for the first time since being 7-4 April 14. With a win Thursday afternoon, the RailRiders can match being a season-best four games over .500 (7-3, April 13).
ALSO WITH A WIN: The RailRiders are aiming for a fourth straight win over Buffalo this week and are looking for a four-game winning streak for the first time all season. It is the 7th time the RailRiders have had a three-game win streak this season, but they haven't been able to get over the hump with a fourth straight win yet. If you consider the split series a four-gamer, the RailRiders look for a four-game sweep of Buffalo since all the way back to... last season: June 16-18 which included a pair of wins in a doubleheader June 17.
TA-KNOCKED HIM AROUND EARLY: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had RHP Masahiro Tanaka make a rehab start with them Wednesday night, He joins RHP Tommy Kahnle, RHP Adam Warren and RHP A.J. Cole as four rehab pitchers for the RailRiders in 2018. He allowed a single and a home run to the first two batters of the game before retiring 15-of-16 to close the outing. He is expected to start for the Yankees in Monday's DH against the Baltimore Orioles.
WINGING IT: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last two weeks. In 15G since June 17, the bullpen arms not named RHP Giovanny Gallegos or rehabber RHP A.J. Cole had combined for 51.2 IP, 30 H (5.2 H/9), 10R/10ER (1.74 ERA). Gallegos had struggled over his last three appearances with the RailRiders, allowing runs in all 3G (4.2 IP, 7 H (7-for-21, .333 BAA), 4R/4ER, 0 BB, 8 K) before tossing two scoreless innings Wednesday.
