Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Robert Stephenson struck out a career-high 12 batters over six shutout innings, and the Bats handed the Tribe a 5-2 defeat on Thursday night. Indians starter Mitch Keller tallied 10 punchouts for his fourth career double-digit strikeout game, but the loss forced Indy to settle for a two-game series split.

Louisville (34-48) secured the lead two batters into the first thanks to a Phillip Ervin solo shot to left, his third dinger of the season. The visitors scored four more times two innings later, sending all nine men to the dish against Keller. Ervin made it 2-0 with an RBI single before consecutive run-scoring doubles by Gabby Guerrero and D.J. Peterson.

Stephenson (W, 8-6) faced the minimum one time through the order, fanning five along the way. An error by first baseman Hernan Iribarren to start the home half of the fourth ended his perfect bid, but the 25-year-old retired the next three batters, two on strikeouts.

Indianapolis' (45-39) first knock came on a slow dribbler by Jason Martin down the first-base line in the fifth. Adam Frazier then singled sharply to center to start the sixth, his first of three singles on the night.

Martin and Frazier helped Indy get on the board in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Frazier laced a two-out liner to Ervin in left who trapped the ball. That play saw both the Tribe runs come home. Jose Osuna eventually stepped in as the go-ahead run, but he grounded out to short to erase the threat.

Kevin Quackenbush (S, 13) struck out two in the ninth for the save. The Indians struck out 18 times as a team, their most in a game since May 10, 2014, when they whiffed a Victory Field-record 20 times against Durham.

The Indians left 10 runners on base and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Indians begin their last first-half series on Friday night against Columbus at 7:15 p.m. EDT. The Tribe will send right-hander Tyler Eppler (8-3, 3.13) to the hill against Clippers righty Adam Plutko (5-3, 1.83).
