From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians built an early 4-0 lead and held off the Bats for a 4-2 win on the Fourth of July. Jordan Luplow tallied his 47th RBI of the season in the first with a single that brought home Kevin Newman, who had walked, stolen second and moved to third on a throwing error by Louisville catcher Chad Tromp. Three innings later, the Tribe scored three times against reliever Evan Mitchell. Sean Rodriguez, Luplow and Jose Osuna strung together singles, the latter making it 2-0. Adam Frazier then walked to load the bases again, and Kevin Kramer bounced into a 4-6-3 twin killer to plate another run. Mitchell couldn't prevent Osuna from scoring, however, as a wild pitch went to the backstop to give Indy its fourth and final run. Brandon Waddell allowed two runs on four hits in the fifth, but the damage was limited thanks to Luplow's ninth outfield assist that nabbed Mason Williams at home. Casey Sadler tossed the final two frames to pick up his first save of the season.

WINNING AT THE VIC: The Indians are 24-16 at The Vic and have won 10 of their last 13 games in the Circle City. Indy has hit .274 thru its first 40 home games this season. Since 2005, that .274 home average would rank third behind the 2005 squad (.282) and 2010 team (.275). The pitching staff also has a solid 3.26 ERA at home, still well behind last year's mark of 2.84.

HITS BEFORE THE BREAK: Kevin Newman's 93 hits before the All-Star break ranks seventh among Tribe players since 2005. The top 10 list and corresponding years are below:

1. Matt Hague - 108 (2011) 6. Starling Marte - 96 (2012)

2. Matt Hague - 107 (2013) 7. Kevin Newman - 93 (2018)

3. Josh Bell - 101 (2016) T-7. Christopher Bostick - 93 (2017)

4. Andrew McCutchen - 99 (2008) 9. Alen Hanson - 88 (2015)

5. Alex Presley - 98 (2011) T-9. Brian Bixler/Chris Duffy - 88 (2007/2005)

80-PLUS KNOCKS: Kevin Newman (93), Jordan Luplow (81) and Kevin Kramer (80) all have 80-plus hits on the season. Since 2005, only three other seasons have featured three or more Tribe players with 80-plus knocks before the All-Star break. The breakdown is below:

2016 - Josh Bell (101), Adam Frazier (87), Willy Garcia (81), Alen Hanson (80)

2013 - Matt Hague (107), Josh Harrison (85), Jared Goedert (83)

2005 - Chris Duffy (88), Nate McLouth (87), Yurendell de Caster (80)

HE'S ON FIRE: Since May 1, Jordan Luplow has hit .330 (70-for-212) with 31 extra-base hits, 41 RBI and 31 runs scored in 59 games. All eight of his home runs with Indy have come on the road. His 144 wRC+ for the season ranks second among International League batting qualifiers.

NO SERIOUSLY, HE'S ON FIRE: Luplow is hitting .348 (39-for-112) since June 1. He has hit safely in 25 of his last 29 overall and is batting .422 (29-for-67) with three homers, five doubles, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and 13 walks against just nine strikeouts over his last 20 games.

DON'T TEST THE CANNON: On top of his powerful presence at the plate, Luplow has been superb defensively for Indy. He threw out Mason Williams at the plate last night to keep Indy's lead intact at 4-2, marking his ninth outfield assist and sixth at home plate this season. He is second in the league in OF assists behind Durham's Justin Williams (10).

LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: With two more shutout innings last night, Casey Sadler's 3.86 ERA is the lowest it's been this season. He picked up his seventh career save in the win and first since May 12, 2012 with High-A Bradenton vs. St. Lucie. Five of his seven career saves have been multi-inning appearances. He had two saves in 2012 and four in 2011. Since May 22, he has allowed just six earned runs in 28.2 innings pitched (1.88 ERA). During that stretch, he's gone 2-1 and walked just 2.5 batters per 9.0 innings (8 BB/28.2 IP); he walked 5.0 batters per 9.0 innings (14 BB/25 IP) across his first eight 2018 appearances.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Jose Osuna picked up where he left off with Indy, going 1-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and a walk last night. He is batting .340 (51-for-150) with four homers, 19 doubles, 32 RBI and a .940 OPS in 41 games for the Tribe. His 162 wRC+ is the second-best mark among International League batters with at least 150 plate appearances, trailing only Scranton/W-B's Clint Frazier (163). Since June 3 with Indy, Osuna has batted .375 (21-for-56) with six doubles, 13 RBI and seven runs scored.
