Louisville Bats Notes: July 4

July 5, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

WEDNESDAY IN THE PARK: The Bats and Indians continue a split series at Victory Field after splitting the first 2 games at Louisville Slugger Field. The Bats won 3-2 Tuesday night behind a strong pitching performance by right-hander Homer Bailey , who tossed his second straight quality start in his fourth rehab outing this season. Tonight the Bats play at Victory Field for the first time since wrapping up a four-game series on May 24.

AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: Louisville and Indianapolis have met 10 times this season, with IND owning a 6-4 advantage. The Indians have outscored the Bats 39-29, with the Bats outhomering them 6-5. It's the first time the clubs are playing each other in back-to-back series since the end of the 2016 season, when they played 4 at Victory Field on September 1-3 (DH on 9/1), and closed out the season with 2 at LSF from September 4-5. With Tuesday night's win, the Bats are within one game of .500 all-time against Indianapolis at Louisville Slugger Field (90-91).

TRANSACTIONS: The Reds announced today that LHP Cody Reed and RHP Tanner Rainey were recalled to Cincinnati. Reed was listed as tonight's starting pitcher, with right-hander Domingo Tapia set to make the spot start, his third start of the 2018 season.

GUERRERO'S BIG GAME: Right fielder Gabriel Guerrero went 2-for-4 with a triple and home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win. He hit a solo homer off Indians starter J.T. Brubaker for the game's first run to lead off the second inning. Guerrero is the first Bat to triple and homer in the same game since Hernan Iribarren did it on May 18, 2017 at Toledo, going 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI and 2 walks in that game. While Phillip Ervin tripled twice in a game this season back on June 3, Guerrero is the first Bat to triple in consecutive games since Scott Schebler tripled in 3 straight games from June 13-15, 2016.

YOU CAN'T SPELL 'INDEPENDENCE DAY' WITHOUT INDY: The Bats and Indians continue their tradition of playing on the Fourth of July at Victory Field after not meeting in 2017 on the holiday for the first time since the 2011 season. Since 2012, the Bats are 3-2 against the Indians on July 4, currently holding a 3-game winning streak. The Bats lost on July 4 last season in a home game vs. Toledo by a 10-8 score.

REHAB STATS: RHP Homer Bailey , who made his fourth (6/11, 23, 28, 7/3) rehab start last night for Louisville, is the fifth MLB rehabber to pitch for the Bats in 2018, along with RHP Anthony DeSclafani (5/25, 30), LHP Brandon Finnegan (4/9) and RHPs David Hernandez (4/20, 23, 25) and Kevin Shackelford (4/22), who have now combined for 11 rehab outings for Louisville this season. The rehabbers have compiled an 7.29 ERA, with 34 earned runs in 42.0 innings on the mound. The Bats are now 3-8 as a club when a pitcher makes a rehab outing.

THAT'S QUACK-TASTIC: Right-hander Kevin Quackenbush has been one of Minor League Baseball's most dominant relief pitchers in 2018, recording his 12th save for Louisville last night. The IL All-Star ranks second in the league with his 12 saves. Quackenbush won the most recent IL Pitcher of the Week award, notching 3 saves from June 25 to July 1. His 15.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio (2 BB, 30 K) easily ranks best among IL relievers.
