LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Durham Bulls 5-4 on Thursday night at PNC Field.
Both teams' bats were quiet through three and a half innings until the RailRiders finally jumped on the board first. Mike Ford and Ronald Torreyes both singled and Billy McKinney bashed a three-run home run deep over the right-field wall. Later in the inning, Clint Frazier hit a sacrifice fly to score Mark Payton from third, extending the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 4-0.
Durham answered quickly in the top of the fifth as Michael Russell singled, stole second, then was knocked in by Kean Wong with an RBI double. Brandon Snyder walked and Justin Williams smacked a three-run home run to tie up the game. The Bulls took the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Willy Adames smacked a lead-off triple. Snyder then hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Adames from third.
Hunter Wood picked up his second win of the season, throwing three scoreless innings on two hits. Ian Gibaut recorded the save for Durham, working a perfect ninth.
For Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Chance Adams threw better than his final line indicates, tossing four scoreless innings before the damage in fifth. The right-hander went five innings allowing four runs on six hits, striking out nine and walking four.
HOME COOKING: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opened a 10-game, nine-day homestand Tuesday with a 6-3 win in the first of a three-game set against Durham before dropping the next two games to drop the series. The Louisville Bats are now in town Friday through Sunday, after which the longest homestand of the season concludes with four games over three days against Rochester, including a doubleheader on June 12 to make up for a rainout on May 12. The homestand begins with the RailRiders owning a 15-12 record at home on the year (now 16-14) and were 5.0 games back of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (now 7.0 games back).
KEEPING PACE: INF Brandon Drury doubled in the 7th inning Tuesday to extend his hit streak to 9-straight games which is the longest by a RailRider this season, but he went 0-for-3 at the plate Wednesday/Thursday to see the streak end. His on-base streak is now 29 games however after a first-inning intentional walk against the Bulls; every contest he has played in Triple-A this season between his rehab stint and after he was optioned on May 14. Drury's streak is the second longest in RailRiders history dating back to 2013, having eclipsed Cole Figueroa's 26-game run in 2015, Rob Refsnyder's (2015) and Donovan Solano's (2017) 25-game streaks. OF Jake Cave holds the RailRiders mark at 31 in-a-row last season.
LONG TIME, NOT GONNA SEE: The RailRiders will not face the Indianapolis Indians again until August 13-15, and after ushering the Durham Bulls out of town, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will not face the Bulls again until August 10-12 at DBAP. Following Sunday's game, the RailRiders won't see Louisville again until 2019.
KAHNLE LOOKS ABLE: In the top of the 9th inning, RHP Tommy Kahnle entered out of the bullpen for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. It was the third appearance with a Yankees minor league team this season which were a pair rehab appearances with both Charleston and SWB in late May. In fact for Kahnle, who was originally drafted by the Yankees before spending time with the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox, it was his first appearance in a game as a Yankees minor leaguer since September 11, 2013 in Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship series. He tossed the final 0.2 innings to secure the save in a 5-4 win and put the Thunder up 2-0 en route to a three-game sweep over the Harrisburg Senators.
