Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Stripers had the tying and winning runs on base with no outs in the ninth inning, but weren't able to plate either as they dropped their seventh straight game Friday night, falling 3-2 to the Syracuse Chiefs at Coolray Field.
Carlos Franco led off the ninth with a single, then Rio Ruiz singled to put runners at first and second with no outs. Sean Kazmar Jr. laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Chiefs' closer Jimmy Cordero (S, 2) fielded it and threw to third, getting Franco on a close play. Rob Brantly flew out to left, then Tyler Smith struck out to end the game.
The Stripers took an early lead in the game against right-hander Erick Fedde. Danny Santana led off the first inning with a double and Dustin Peterson drove him in with a single. After a Michael Reed fielder's choice, Franco drilled a pitch off the wall in left to bring Reed around from first. It was Franco's International League-leading 41st RBI on the season, extending the Stripers' lead to 2-0.
The game was decided in the third inning, as the Chiefs tagged Gwinnett's Kolby Allard for all three of their runs.
Bengie Gonzalez led off the inning with a single. Fedde put a bunt down and Brantly tagged him outside the batter's box, but Brantly's throw to get Gonzalez at second base sailed into the outfield and allowed the runner to go to third. Former Striper Jaff Decker walked, then Jacob Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-1.
Jose Marmolejos smacked an RBI double to tie the game. Following a Moises Sierra walk, Matt Hague had the game-winning single, driving home Marmolejos.
Allard (L, 4-2) otherwise battled through his other frames, tallying his eighth consecutive quality start. His final line was 6.0 innings, six hits, three earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Fedde (W, 3-2) lasted 5.1 innings with eight hits and two earned runs allowed with six strikeouts. Josh Edgin (H, 5) and Christopher Smith (H, 3) combined for three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
Rex Brothers and Jason Hursh worked three clean innings combined in the loss.
Franco finished 3-for-4 on the night with an RBI. Ruiz, Peterson and Smith were each 2-for-4.
Decker went 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored for the Chiefs.
The Stripers (24-34) and Chiefs (28-30) face off for game two at Coolray Field Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Righty Matt Wisler (1-3, 5.03 ERA) gets the start for Gwinnett against fellow righty Phillips Valdez (2-1, 1.55 ERA) for Syracuse. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 5:35 p.m.
