SWB Game Notes

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

BAD DAY: The RailRiders dropped a heartbreaking 7-5 decision to the Clippers on Saturday at PNC Field. SWB blew a 4-0 lead, allowing seven unanswered tallies. It marked the team's largest blown lead in a loss all season. SWB had been 24-0 when leading after eight innings before two-out doubles by Erik Gonzalez and Giovanny Urshela each knocked in a pair of runs in Columbus' four-run ninth.

TWO-OUT THUNDER: Gonzalez's two-run single that gave Columbus the lead in the ninth came after he fell down 0-2 in the count against James Pazos (2-2). In fact, five two-out hits drove in all of Columbus' runs in the game, including three with two strikes on the hitter.

FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The RailRiders' first loss of the season when leading after eight innings leaves just three IL teams that have yet to lose when holding the advantage after eight innings: Columbus, 21-0; Lehigh Valley, 21-0; Norfolk, 14-0. Last year's SWB team went 69-3 when up after eight.

@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka bashed his second Triple-A home run on a 1-for-3 day with a walk and a deep fly-out to center caught at the top of the wall by a leaping Collin Cowgill. "Higgy" entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as the primary catcher for Double-A Trenton to start this season. In six games as a RailRider this season, he has gone 7-for-23 (.304) with four RBIs, three extra-base hits and five runs scored.

FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The RailRiders took two of three versus the Clippers at PNC Field last August. That made for the SWB franchise's first series win over Columbus in NEPA since the last Red Barons swept Dave Miley's Clippers in a four-game set from April 18-21, 2006. The RailRiders must win today to settle for a sweep on this four-game set.

THEY HAVE OUR NUMBER: SWB and Columbus split the 2015 series, 3-3, with four of the games decided by one run. Eighteen of the last 34 clashes between the clubs have come down to a single score with Columbus taking 11 of those close calls. The RailRiders have lost 19 of the last 24 meetings with 12 one-run finals.

INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin from Double-A Trenton. Austin spent most of 2015 with SWB (73GP, .235/.309/.311/.620), usually playing right field. Mostly a first baseman this year at Double-A, in 50 games he slashed .260/.367/.395/.762 with a team-high 29 RBIs while ranking second on the club in doubles (10). He launched a homer in his first plate appearance last night and finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
