Norfolk Tides News Release
Michael Almanzar homered, but the Pawtucket Red Sox got a complete game effort from Roenis Elias in a 4-1 victory over the Tides Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Almanzar belted a solo shot with one out in the third for Norfolk's lone run of the contest. The homer was Almanzar's fourth of the season and extended his hitting streak to five games, over which he's hit .400 (7-15) with two RBI. The 25-year-old third baseman has now hit .310 (18-58) with two home runs and four RBI in 18 games since coming off the disabled list on May 16.
Elias (3-3) was tremendous as he turned in Pawtucket's second complete game of the season. The 27-year-old southpaw scattered six hits and two walks while striking out eight to earn his second victory over Norfolk in 2016. In 16.2 innings pitched against the Tides this year, he's registered 21 strikeouts and just 11 hits allowed.
Norfolk starter David Hale (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work. Hale, who struck out four while walking one, departed the contest having allowed just two runs, but Jose Vinicio hit a two-out, two-run single off of Richard Rodriguez to plate two inherited runners.
Vinicio, who didn't record his first Triple-A hit until Thursday, had two hits Sunday and finished the four-game set batting .533 (8-15) with five runs batted in.
Trey Mancini had two hits in the contest to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. He's also now reached base safely in 13 consecutive contests, over which he's batted .354 (17-48).
The Tides welcome division rival Durham to Harbor Park on Monday night for a two-game set. Ariel Miranda (1-5, 4.81) is slated to start for Norfolk against right-hander Jamie Schultz (4-2, 2.87), with first pitch set for 7:05 pm.
Notes: Dariel Alvarez hit his league-leading 17th double in the contest...Norfolk went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position Sunday and finished the four-game series with Pawtucket 5-for-50 with RISP...Pedro Beato worked a scoreless inning of relief, the 12th consecutive outing in which he's not surrendered an earned run...Before yielding two inherited runners to score Sunday, Richard Rodriguez had allowed just two of 15 inherited runners to score.
