Hot Bats Key as Tribe Splits Twinbill
June 5, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians slugged their way to a win in the opening game of today's doubleheader, but were overtaken late in the nightcap to split the twinbill with Toledo on Sunday at Fifth Third Field.
The series victory against the Mud Hens propelled the Tribe into second place in the IL West behind Columbus, their next opponent in a four-game series.
Adam Frazier finished 5-for-7 with two doubles on the day as he posted his league season-best 26th consecutive game on base, surpassing teammate Josh Bell's mark of 25.
Game One:
The International League's ERA leader, Chad Kuhl, toed the rubber for the Tribe, but the game was decided at the plate as five Indians notched an RBI in a 7-5 victory.
Indianapolis scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth. Four straight hits in the first inning, including a double by Adam Frazier, gave the Indians an early one run lead.
Alen Hanson's fourth home run of the year came in the second and Dan Gamache doubled before scoring on a Willy Garcia base knock in the third.
Kuhl ran into trouble in the fourth. After striking out the first two batters in the frame, a hit and a walk put two men on ahead of John Hicks, who belted a three-run shot to left center field to knot the game, 4-4.
Garcia collected another RBI in the fifth and Danny Oritz smacked an RBI double to put the Tribe up, 6-4, before Toledo got one run back in the home half.
Dan Gamache capped off his outstanding Game One with an insurance home run in the top of the seventh, his second of the year. He finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and two runs scored.
Kelvin Marte (2-1) came on in relief of Kuhl in the fourth to earn the win for holding the Mud Hens to one run over 3.1 innings. Kuhl finished with a season-high four earned runs allowed in 3.2 innings.
Game Two:
The Tribe plated two runs in the sixth to tie the game, 3-3, but Casey McGehee delivered a walkoff single in the seventh as Toledo claimed the series finale.
Kyle Lobstein made the start for Indianapolis (29-26) in the nightcap, yielding a run in the opening stanza on McGehee's first of three RBIs on the day.
Danny Ortiz doubled home Willy Garcia in the top of the second to erase the Mud Hens' lead. Ortiz finished 5-for-6 with three RBIs in the doubleheader.
A pair of singles in the third gave Toledo (26-29) back the lead, and they added on in the fifth on McGehee's second RBI.
Things took a positive turn for the Tribe in the sixth when Max Moroff singled to right, scoring Ed Easley and Gift Ngoepe, to tie the game at three. The scales would not be level long as McGehee delivered his key hit in just the next inning.
Jim Fuller (0-1) took the loss while Bruce Rondon (2-2) received the win.
The Indians will next travel to face first place Columbus starting Monday at 7:05 p.m. Tyler Glasnow (5-2, 2.07) will face Ross Detwiler (0-3, 3.42).
