Gwinnett Stripers News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (26-32) capitalized on eight walks by Gwinnett Braves' pitchers and rolled to a 9-0 win on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With their fifth loss in a row, Gwinnett (25-32) slips to third place in the International League South, a half game behind Durham.
Atlanta Braves' right-hander Shae Simmons, making his third rehab start with Gwinnett, pitched a scoreless first inning.
But in the second inning, the Bulls got on the board against right-hander Lucas Sims. With one out, Dayron Varona singled to left, and walks to Luke Maile and Cameron Seitzer loaded the bases. Juniel Querecuto grounded out to second, scoring Varona from third for a 1-0 lead.
As the G-Braves were finding no answers against Durham left-hander Blake Snell, the Bulls jumped on Sims with a four-run bottom of the third. Back-to-back walks to Daniel Robertson and Jake Goebbert and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Both scored on a double to center by Kyle Roller for a 3-0 Durham lead. Varona (7) then cracked a long two-run homer to left to push the lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sims walked Querecuto and then gave up a two -un homer to Johnny Field (1) to make it 7-0. After a walk to Richie Shaffer, Sims was lifted in favor of Ryan Weber, who walked Roller and gave up an RBI single to Varona for a 8-0 deficit.
The Bulls capped the day's scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Goebbert drilled a two-out RBI single to center off Weber.
Simmons went 1.0 inning with one walk and two strikeouts. Sims (L, 1-5) pitched 2.2 innings with four hits, eight earned runs, six walks and three strikeouts. Weber worked 2.1 innings with three hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
