Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Behind six shutout innings from Blake Snell and three RBI from Dayron Varona, the Durham Bulls beat the Gwinnett Braves 9-0 Sunday evening at the DBAP, sweeping the four-game set and winning their fifth straight game.
Varona led Durham's offense, which scored nine runs for the second straight game, by going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Johnny Field finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Durham (26-32) opened the scoring in the second inning, as a Juniel Querecuto ground out scored Varona for a 1-0 lead. In the second the Bulls offense erupted for four runs, as Kyle Roller drove home a pair with a double to center field, and Varona cracked a two-run dinger over the Blue Monster.
In the fourth frame the onslaught continued, as Field blasted a two-run homer off the Snorting Bull atop the Blue Monster - his first Triple-A home run - to extend Durham's lead to 7-0. Later in the frame Varona struck again with an RBI single to center, and Jake Goebbert chipped in an RBI knock in the fifth to make it a 9-0 contest.
Snell (3-4) extended his scoreless streak to 11 innings, turning in six frames while striking out nine, walking three and allowing five hits to earn the win. Lucas Sims (1-5) took the loss for Gwinnett (25-32), allowing eight runs across 2 2/3 innings while walking six.
The Bulls hit the road for a brief two-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Monday. RHP Jaime Schultz (4-2, 2.87) will take the hill for Durham against LHP Ariel Miranda (1-5, 4.81) for Norfolk. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Harbor Park.
