McGehee's Walk-Off Helps Hens Split DH with Indy
June 5, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens avoided a sweep on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with Indianapolis. After late runs caused the Hens to drop the first contest, they answered back with a walk-off winner in the second game via the bat of Casey McGehee.
The Indians jumped on Toledo starting pitcher Buck Farmer early in the first game, putting up two runs on base hits by Max Moroff, Adam Frazier, and Josh Bell to take an early lead. They would get right back to it in the second with a solo shot off the bat of leadoff hitter Alen Hanson. Farmer was able to get two quick outs in the third, but Dan Gamache doubled to left-center and was driven in by Willy Garcia to create a quick 4-0 lead for Indy.
Jordany Valdespin would jumpstart the Hens' offense in the home half of the third when he hammered a 2-2 pitch into the right-center bleachers. The solo homer was Valdespin's third of the season and second in as many games.
Indianapolis starter Chad Kuhl gave the Hens some trouble through the first three innings, but the bats heated up in the fourth. Tyler Collins sparked the rally with a single to right followed by a steal of second base to get himself in scoring position. McGehee walked before John Hicks drove a 1-1 pitch to deep left-center to tie the game 4-4. Hicks' fourth home run since joining the club in May served to end Kuhl's day on the mound.
Lefty Drake Britton came on in the 5th inning to replace Farmer, who spread eight hits and three earned runs over four innings while having three strikeouts and no walks. With Farmer's day done, the Indians got to Britton for two runs to reclaim the lead. Frazier wasted no time welcoming Britton to the game, leading off the inning with a single. The left fielder then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Garcia. Danny Ortiz brought Garcia home on another single, making it 6-4 Indians.
The Mud Hens chipped away at the lead a little bit in the fifth, once again with the help of Hicks' hot bat. Chad Huffman began the rally with a single to right. McGehee picked up a single of his own, moving Huffman to second. Hicks then slapped a single to center to score Huffman and make it a one-run game. This, however, would be the last offense Toledo could muster.
Indianapolis added some insurance in the 7th off the bat of Gamache. The first baseman punched a solo shot to right field on the first pitch he saw from reliever Preston Guilmet to make it 7-5. The home run is just a minor bump in the road for Guilmet, though, as it is the first earned run the righty has surrendered since May 16th at Buffalo.
Indy's Kelvin Marte put the Hens down 1-2-3 in the seventh to close out a 7-5 win for the Indians. Marte, who entered for Kuhl after he gave up the lead in the fourth, was lockdown on the mound. The lefty allowed just three hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings while striking out four en route to earning the win.
The Hens got back to their usual ways in game two by being the first ones to post a crooked number on the scoreboard. Huffman got the offense rolling with a single in the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a throwing error on the play. He then trotted to third after a wild pitch and scored on a single by McGehee. As was the story for the series, Indy answered right back with a run of their own. Garcia singled and was brought in when Ortiz doubled down the right field line to knot it up at 1-1.
The Mud Hens rode the solid start of Chad Bell through four innings. The lefty went four innings while allowing just one earned run on six hits and four walks. He racked up six strikeouts in the process.
Toledo took their first lead of the day when McGehee singled home Tyler Bortnick in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. This lead, however, would not last long. In the next inning, Dustin Molleken got himself into trouble by walking Ortiz and Gift Ngoepe. Kyle Ryan took over on the mound for the Hens and got a groundout, but Ortiz and Ngoepe each moved up a base in the process. Moroff would then single home both runs in the next at-bat to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth.
After going quietly in their half of the sixth and holding the Indians in the top of the seventh, the Hens got right down to business. Instead of waiting for two outs to rally like they have been recently, Huffman began the rally with none down by singling hard off the glove off Moroff at third base. Steven Moya ripped a single to right to bring up McGehee, who promptly grounded a ball down the left field line to collect his third RBI of the game and a 4-3 walk-off win for the Hens.
The Mud Hens hit the road for a seven-game road trip with Pawtucket and Rochester. They then return home for seven games at Fifth Third Field against Scranton Wilks-Barre and Rochester.
