Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SILVER LINING: Named to the prestigious SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game earlier in the day, RailRiders outfielder Aaron Judge provided one of the few SWB highlights in a 15-2 loss to the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds) on Thursday night. Judge lined a two-run homer into the visiting bullpen for his first Triple-A round-tripper in the eighth inning. The RailRiders and Bats (36-38) split the four-game series, snapping SWB's run of consecutive series won at four.
HIT PARADE: The Bats amassed a franchise-record-tying 24 hits (20 singles) to hand the RailRiders their most lopsided loss of the year. It also tied the SWB record for hits allowed in a game, matching the mark set on July 16, 1996 at Pawtucket. The Bats sent nine or more men to the plate in three different innings including a seven-run third championed by a three-run homer by Yorman Rodriguez.
CYCLING: Irving Falu fell a homer shy of the cycle for the Bats while Rodriguez fell a triple short of the feat. Louisville has not had a player go for the cycle since Chris Dickerson turned the trick at SWB on July 26, 2007. Dickerson would later play for both SWB and the New York Yankees. He is currently on Buffalo's DL. He last played on June 10 in a loss to SWB and was removed in the fifth inning.
BAD DAY: SWB starter Jaron Long (5-5) allowed 11 runs on 14 hits in 4.1 innings to suffer the loss. He tied the SWB record for most hits allowed in a game originally set by Carlton Loewer on Aug. 6, 1997 versus Syracuse. Long also matched the mark for most runs allowed in a game previously set by John Martin on April 29, 1989 at Pawtucket and Clay Condrey on July 25, 2004 versus Toledo. Only Long and Condrey's efforts saw all 11 runs earned. Loewer and Condrey each had multiple years of MLB time with the Phillies and Padres.
GAUDY OFFENSIVE: Louisville went 24-for-48 (.500) as a team including a 13-for-22 (.591) showing with men in scoring position.
STREAKING STROKE: Despite a nearly week-long layoff in the wake of being hit in the head with a fastball, Austin Romine has assembled a 12-game hitting streak. He has hit .367 (18-for-49) over his run with 12 RBIs. Four of his five home runs and 21 of his 29 RBIs have come on the road, but his home contact clip (.270) stands within a point of his road number (.271). Romine surpassed Rob Refsnyder's 11-game run from May 10-21 as the longest by a 2015 RailRider. Only Columbus' Jose Ramirez (15) owns a longer active hitting streak in the IL.
JUNE JUMP: In 16 games played this month, shortstop Nick Noonan has hit .383/.433/.550/.983. He ranks among the IL's best in June average (2nd), OBP (4th), SLG (5th) and OPS (3rd).
ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders stand three games below .500 at PNC Field (19-22) and 14 games over on the road (24-10). The team has hit .281 on the road compared to a .261 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 178 runs in 34 games (5.2/game). At home, the squad has plated 157 runs in 41 games (3.8/game). The pitching has performed better on the road (3.45 ERA) than at home (3.52 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.706), who have won 17 of 20 away from PNC Field.
OFF THE RAILS: The game took just 2:21 but started 16 minutes late due to the threat of rain...The RailRiders turned a season-high-tying four double plays, matching their May 11 effort at Norfolk...Ali Castillo (3-for-4) and Rob Segedin (2-for-4) accounted for more than half of the RailRiders' hits...Each man hit ninth and eighth respectively...Tyler Austin went 0-for-4 with a strikeout as his hitting streak stalled at eight games...During his run, he went 11-for-28 (.393)...He served as the DH last night, a role that has seen him go 2-for-27 (.074) with 11 strikeouts...He has hit .251 (46-for-183) as an outfielder...SWB is an IL-best 17-7 in June.
