Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A six-run eighth inning cost the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (29-47) in an 11-5 loss to the Louisville Bats (37-38) on Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The Bats took the lead for good with the afore-mentioned six-run eighth to open up a 10-5 lead. Yorman Rodriguez's two-run single in the inning off of RHP Dustin McGowan (0.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER) gave Louisville the lead before Ramon Cabrera came through with an RBI double, Ryan LaMarre brought home a run with a pinch-hit RBI single, Jason Bourgeois plated another with an RBI single and Hernan Iribarren drove home Bourgeois with an RBI single to provide some insurance runs.
McGowan was tagged with the loss and drops to 1-1 on the season.
RHP Jose De La Torre (1.0 IP, R, 0 ER, BB, K) got the win for the Bats to improve his record to 4-3 on the year.
10 of the 11 Louisville runs came over the final three innings of the contest.
The IronPigs took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the home half of the first as Gabriel Lino (1-4, 3 RBI) delivered the big blow in the inning with a bases-clearing, three-run double and Russ Canzler (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) plated the other run with an RBI double.
All four runs were charged to Bats starter Matt Buschmann (n/d) who gave up the four runs on six hits while walking three and fanning seven in six innings of work.
Louisville had runners at the corners with two outs in the fourth and Rodriguez cut the lead to 4-1 with an RBI single.
The Bats would tie it with three runs in the seventh against Pigs LHP Cesar Jimenez (1.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER). Cabrera hit a solo home run in the frame, Bourgeois delivered an RBI single and the tying run scored when Iribarren grounded into a 3-6 double play that ended the inning but Irving Falu crossed home plate before the final out of the frame was recorded.
In a rehab start, RHP Chad Billingsley got a no-decision for Lehigh Valley after surrendering a run on five hits while walking one and fanning four in five innings of work.
In the top of the seventh, the Pigs took a 5-4 lead without a hit in the inning. With the bases loaded and one away, Canzler drew a leadoff walk to score pinch-hitter Tyler Henson who was hit by a pitch to lead off before a pair of throwing errors by De La Torre loaded the bases.
Louisville tacked on a run in the top of the ninth to make it 11-5 as Brennan Boesch led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch by RHP Juan Gutierrez (1.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, K) and scored on Rodriguez's RBI single.
LHP Adam Loewen (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K) and RHP Nefi Ogando (0.1 IP) had scoreless relief outings for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. as Pigs RHP Jason Berken (4-4, 3.70) will be on the bump against Bats RHP Dylan Axelrod (4-5, 4.31).
