Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
AKRON, OH - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs, are pleased to announce that LHP Eric Surkamp has been named to the 2011 Eastern League Post-Season All-Star Team. Surkamp was selected as the top left-handed starting pitcher in the league.
The native of Cincinnati, OH, becomes the second Flying Squirrel chosen to a post-season all-star team, joining RHP Rafael Cova, who was selected as the top relief pitcher following the 2010 season.
Touted as the #9 prospect in the San Francisco system prior to the season by Baseball America, Surkamp has dominated the Eastern League in his first tour at the Double-A level. Boasting a 10-4 record, he currently leads the league with an ERA of 2.02, while also pacing the circuit in strikeouts (165) and WHIP (1.08). He is also second in the league in batting average against (.213), and trails the league-leaders in wins by one. In 23 appearances on the season, he has posted double-digit strikeout totals eight times. He has established new franchise records for strikeouts in a single outing (12), and strikeouts in a single-season (165). If the 2011 season ended today, he would also establish franchise marks for ERA (2.02), average against (.213), and WHIP (1.08).
Recently, BA tabbed him as having the best breaking-pitch and best changeup in the Eastern League in 2011. Surkamp has twice been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, and was also tabbed as a midseason Western Division All-Star.
A sixth round selection of the San Francisco Giants out of North Carolina State in the 2008 draft, the 24-year old is currently in his fourth professional season. He was also named a mid and post-season California League All-Star while with San Jose during the 2010 season.
The Flying Squirrels continue their seven-day, eight-game road trip on Thursday night at Canal Park with the opener of a four game series against the Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians). First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM, with pregame coverage beginning on Sports Radio 910, and SportsRadio910.com at 6:35 PM.
