HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Hagerstown broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-3, in South Atlantic League action at Municipal Stadium Saturday evening.
The Suns avoid the sweep and snap a five-game losing streak in improving to 31-32, while Charleston sees its three-game win streak end and sits at 29-33.
Justin Bloxom hammered a one-out solo home run in the eighth off Dickson Marquez (0-3) for his first long ball of the season and a 4-3 Suns lead. After a single by J.R. Higley, Brett Newsome drove him home with a RBI double and a 5-3 margin.
Rob Wort (1-0) worked 2.0 scoreless innings out of the Suns bullpen to notch his first win.
With a 3-3 score in the eighth, J.R. Murphy and Rob Lyerly stroked consecutive singles to leadoff the inning, and Kyle Higashioka's sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third. However, with DeAngelo Mack batting, Hagerstown catcher Adrian Nieto picked Murphy off of third for the second out. Even after Mack walked and a passed ball put second and third with two down, Wort induced a 3-2 popout from Hector Rabago to end the threat.
Steven Souza gave Hagerstown a 2-0 lead in the first against Josh Romanski with his ninth home run of the year.
With two outs in the second, Mack ripped an opposite-field home run for his fourth of the campaign off of Hagerstown's Danny Rosenbaum for a 2-1 score.
Zoilo Almonte tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to centerfield.
Emerson Landoni helped Charleston regain a 3-2 lead in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but Hagerstown knotted the game back at 3-3 in the bottom half on a RBI single by Eury Perez.
Romanski worked a career-best 7.0 innings in the no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Rosenbaum, who will be the Northern Division's starting pitcher at 2010 SAL All-Star Game, worked 5.0 innings and gave up two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.
Lyerly and Ray Kruml each had three hits for Charleston, while Almonte rapped two to pace the team's 10-hit attack.
Charleston receives an off day on Sunday before beginning a three-game homestand against the Augusta GreenJacketes, a San Francisco Giants affiliate, on Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Game one features RiverDogs right-hander Sean Black (4-4, 4.53 ERA) taking to the mound against Augusta right-hander B.J. Salsbury (5-3, 3.47 ERA).
