Jose Altuve hit two home runs as the Lexington Legends edged the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-8 Saturday night at Applebee's Park. The Legends completed a three-game sweep, and extended their winning streak to a season-high five games.
Altuve was 4-for-5 for the game and drove in four runs.
The Legends jumped out in front with a five-run second inning against Delmarva starter Jesse Beal. Jake Goebbert led off with a single, stole second and went to third as Jonathan Meyer reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Garabez Rosa. Andy Simunic followed with the first home run of his professional career to give Lexington a 3-0 lead. One out later, Brian Kemp singled, and Altuve hit his seventh home run of the year to make the score 5-0.
Delmarva didn't score until the fifth inning, but rallied then with three runs on only one hit. A throwing error by shortstop Miguel Arrendell, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Gary Helmick produced one run. Brian Conley walked to load the bases. Zach Grimmett relieved starter Brad Dydalewicz for Lexington and hit Kieron Pope with a pitch to score the second run. Tyler Stampone singled to score the third run of the inning to leave the score at 5-3.
Pope's three-run double in the sixth put the Shorebirds ahead 6-5, but the Legends came back in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Jake Smith from Owensboro, Ky. With two outs and the bases empty, Kemp singled and Altuve homered to right center field to put Lexington in front 7-6. Miguel Arrendell walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home on a single by J.D. Martinez to give the Legends an 8-6 lead.
Delmarva tied it at 8-8 in the eighth, scoring one run on a throwing error by reliever Colton Pitkin, and another on a single by Pope, his fourth RBI of the game. In between, Simunic, playing right field, threw out a runner at home.
It was still tied when Martinez singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Goebbert singled to right field, sending Martinez to third, and Goebbert stopped between first and second as the ball was returned to the infield. First baseman Tyler Baxter tried to get Goebbert in a rundown by throwing to second, but threw high, allowing Martinez to score as the ball went into the outfield.
Martinez had four hits in five at-bats, and now leads the South Atlantic League with a batting average of .375.
The Legends open a three game series at Lakewood Monday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
