Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power dropped the series finale to the Lakewood BlueClaws Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park by an 11-5 final. The Power have lost four straight and were swept in a series for the first time this season.
Lakewood scored two runs in the first inning against Phillip Irwin, but West Virginia rallied to tie after three. Kyle Morgan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second, while Jarek Cunningham singled in the second run in the third.
Irwin would hold the BlueClaws offense in check through five innings, but Sebastian Valle gave Lakewood a 3-2 lead with a solo home run against Gabriel Alvarado to start the sixth inning. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Kyle Morgan drove the first pitch he saw from Julio Rodriguez over the right field wall in the bottom of the inning for a 5-3 Power lead.
Lakewood countered with three runs in the seventh inning and five unearned runs in the eighth to close the scoring at 11-5. West Virginia committed four errors for the second straight game, including three in the eighth with Marc Baca on the mound.
Alvarado (1-3) was charged with the loss, while Josh Zeid (4-2) earned the win. Morgan drove in four of the Power's runs, and Cunningham's single in the third extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games.
The Power have Sunday off and open a three game series against the Crawdads in Hickory. West Virginia returns to Appalachian Power Park again on June 17 against Hagerstown. West Virginia University's Bob Huggins will make a special appearance at the park on the 17.
