Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Jorge Bucardo fell one out shy of earning a nine-inning complete game, striking out seven in a 3-1 win for the Augusta GreenJackets over the Hickory Crawdads at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday night.
With a crowd of 3,873 on hand, Bucardo fired seven or more innings for the fourth straight time to earn the win - his sixth straight win in as many decisions. Bucardo (6-2) allowed just an unearned run on four hits and a walk through 8.2 innings. He struck out seven Crawdads in the contest.
The Jackets got on the board in the third on an RBI from Ydwin Villegas. With runners at the corners, Villegas hit a high chopper to the mound that Hickory starter Robbie Ross bobbled. Luke Anders scored on the play to make it a 1-0 game.
Augusta added to the lead in the fifth inning on Ryan Cavan's two-run home run, his second of the season. Prior to the home run, Evan Crawford led off the inning with his league-leading tenth triple of the year. Hickory got on the board with an unearned run in the eighth inning as a result of an Anders error at first base.
Ross (8-5) broke a four-game winning streak with the loss tonight, firing six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
After an infield single with two outs in the ninth, Bucardo was lifted to a standing ovation and replaced by Jose Casilla. With a runner at first, Zach Zaneski drove a Casilla offering to deep right-center, but Ryan Lollis ran at full speed to make a diving catch to preserve the win for Bucardo. Casilla earned his second save of the season as a result.
With the day off on Sunday and seven games remaining in the first half, the GreenJackets head to Charleston on Monday to open their third series of the year against the RiverDogs. BJ Salsbury (5-3, 3.47) takes the mound for Augusta in the opener and will face Sean Black (4-4, 4.53). First pitch from Charleston will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
