
Suns Drop Finale to Barons, 8-7

Jacksonville, Fla. - Suns third baseman Matt Dominguez hit his 12th home run of the season, finishing with four RBI, in a losing effort as the Birmingham Barons (38-73, 14-27) defeated the Jacksonville Suns (64-47, 25-16) 8-7 in front of 5,736 Friday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Barons reliever Henry Mabee (2-5) picked up the winning decision after allowing three runs and five hits in one and two-thirds innings. Suns starter Andrew Miller (1-7) took the loss, giving up seven runs and seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over six and two-thirds innings. Anthony Carter (15) saved the game with a perfect one and one-thirds innings performance.
Birmingham opened the scoring in the first inning, when Christian Marrero hit a two-out, two-run home run into the right field seats for a 2-0 Barons lead.
Jacksonville chipped into the lead in the third inning when Chris Hatcher singled and scored on a Vinny Rottino sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 2-1 score.
The Barons added to the lead in the fourth as Jim Gallagher led off with his eighth home run of the season, extending the Barons advantage to 3-1.
Jacksonville got back to within one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tim Torres doubled with two out and came in to score on a Jason Delaney single for a 3-2 game.
The Suns gained their only lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ozzie Martinez singled with two out before Vinny Rottino drew a walk. Matt Dominguez next doubled to right-centerfield to bring in both runners for a 4-3 Jacksonville lead.
Birmingham took the lead for good in the seventh inning, scoring five runs in a ten-batter frame. John Shelby III and Eduardo Escobar singled home runs while a Justin Greene groundout pushed another run across. Later in the inning Salvador Sanchez singled home two more runs for an 8-4 Barons lead.
Jacksonville rallied for a three-run bottom of the inning. Martinez was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a Mabee balk. Vinny Rottino next singled Martinez in for an 8-5 score. Matt Dominguez next blasted a two-run home run off the left-centerfield scoreboard, cutting the Birmingham lead to 8-7.
