Carolina Mudcats News Release
Huntsville, AL --- Caleb Gindl drilled game-winning two-run single off of the body of Brad Boxberger with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Huntsville stunned the Carolina Mudcats yet again 6-5 at Joe Davis Stadium on Friday night.
After the Stars (24-17) took three of the first four in the series, two wins thanks to game-ending homers, it appeared as though fate would be fond of the Mudcats (19-22) when Devin Mesoraco hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give Carolina a 5-4 lead. However, the Stars' ninth inning started on a broken bat single by Chris Nowak, then a walk put the winning run aboard. A sacrifice moved the runners to second and third and an intentional walk filled the bases. Boxberger then froze pinch-hitter Zelous Wheeler for the second out. However, Gindl hit the first pitch against the leg of Boxberger, with the ball deflecting into the second base hole, allowing two runs to score and the Stars leaving the Mudcats to walk off the field again.
Carolina had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dave Sappelt homered against Wily Peralta. Sean Henry then scampered home from third base on a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage.
Tom Cochran was perfect the first time through the lineup before surrendering three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Brett Lawrie doubled home Lee Haydel in the fifth to boost the lead to 4-2 before Carolina rallied.
With one out against reliever Nick Green, Mike Costanzo walked, Luis Terrero singled to right before Mesoraco drove out his 21st combined home run for a 5-4 lead.
The Mudcats trail first-place Tennessee by six games with 29 to play, and open a five-game hoemstand with Chattanooga on Saturday night at 6:15 PM ET. Travis Webb (5-7, 5.04) starts for the Mudcats.
