Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns broke open a tie game with four runs in the ninth inning, defeating the Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-4, on Friday night in front of 2,513 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The Intimidators (28-33) lost their fifth in a row while the Suns (37-23) won their sixth straight.
With the game tied 2-2, Jason Martinson led off the top of the ninth with a walk and moved to third on Matthew Skole's ground-rule double. Justin Miller reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Martinson, and two batters later Hendry Jimenez connected on his first home run of the season, a 3-run shot that put the Suns up, 6-2.
Leighton Pangilinan blasted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to pull Kannapolis within two runs and chase Suns pitcher Wilson Eusebio from the game. Greg Holt retired the next three Intimidators to end the game and earn the save (1).
Eusebio (1-0) earned the win, tossing two perfect relief innings before allowing a leadoff single and Pangilinan's home run in the ninth. Bryan Blough (1-3) took the loss for Kannapolis, allowing four runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Keenyn Walker led off the home half of the first inning with a single to left field, stole second and moved to third on a Ross Wilson groundout. Rangel Ravelo's sacrifice fly scored Walker for the early 1-0 lead.
Blair Walters kept the Suns off the scoreboard through the first four innings, allowing three hits and striking out five batters. Walters took no decision, leaving a 2-2 game after seven innings on the mound having allowed two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Justin Miller put the Suns on the board with a two-out home run in the top of the fifth, tying the game, 1-1.
Grant Buckner put the Intimidators back in front in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double and eventually scored on a David Herbek ground ball, but the Suns knotted the game again on a Martinson RBI- single in the next inning.
The Intimidators and Suns play the second game of this three-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. A fireworks show presented by CMC-NorthEast will follow the game. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
