Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Rome, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets overshadowed a rehab appearance by Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones by racking up 16 runs on 17 hits in a 16-4 shellacking of the Rome Braves on Friday night in Rome to extend their winning streak to a season-long four games.

Jones made his presence known early in the game, singling on the first pitch he saw from Augusta starter Kevin Couture to drive in a first-inning run and give the Braves an early 1-0 lead. He walked in his other two trips to the plate and left after playing five innings. He's scheduled to play all nine innings on Saturday and possibly Sunday for the Braves after originally being slated to play just the weekend games of the series.

The GreenJackets took the lead in the second and never looked back. Joe Staley singled home the game-tying run while Garrett Buechele followed with the go-ahead RBI single that gave Augusta a 2-1 lead in the second. The GreenJackets sent ten hitters to the plate in the fourth to push the game out of reach with a five-run frame. Buechele and Brett Krill singled home runs, Jesus Galindo tripled home another, Kelby Tomlinson singled home a fourth and Ben Thomas's RBI single capped the five-run frame. By the time the dust cleared, the GreenJackets had a 7-1 lead after three and a half innings.

Rome got a run back on Cory Brownsten's RBI double in the fourth to pull the Braves back to within 7-2, but the GreenJackets turned the game into a laugher with an eight-run fifth inning. Sending 11 hitters to the plate, Augusta got a two-run Krill single, a Jones error brought home another, a Tomlinson sacrifice fly plated a fourth and Thomas singled home another run with his third of four hits in the contest. Jose Cuevas stepped to the plate later in the inning and capped the frame with a three-run home run - his first since April 27th - to make it a 15-2 GreenJackets lead.

The Braves got runs in the sixth and eighth innings on a Kyle Kubitza RBI double and a Kubitza groundout respectively before Thomas capped his four-hit game with a ninth-inning RBI double to make it a 16-4 lead. DeMondre Arnold retired three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth to finish the GreenJackets second win against the Braves in seven tries.

Kevin Couture allowed two runs on five hits and a pair of walks in four innings to take the no decision. Adalberto Mejia (4-4) didn't deliver his best relief outing - allowing two runs on six hits and a walk in four innings - but it was good enough to get the win in relief in the blowout.

Rome starter Navery Moore (3-3), who had dominated the GreenJackets in his last two starts against Augusta - both wins - struggled in his most recent outing against the Jackets. He lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks.

The GreenJackets set several season-highs in the contest. 16 runs and 17 hits are both season-highs for Augusta, as well as their 12-run margin of victory.

The GreenJackets will send Edwin Escobar (2-3, 3.92) to the mound on Friday in search of their fifth straight win. Rome counters with Greg Ross (0-4, 6.12) in the middle game of a three-game series. First pitch from Rome comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

The GreenJackets return home on Monday to return the favor against the Braves, hosting Rome in the opener of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
