Gardner, Charleston Take Opener from Savannah

CHARLESTON, SC- Scottie Allen allowed just one run in six strong innings as the Charleston RiverDogs beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-1 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in South Atlantic League action on Friday night to send the crowd of 5,393 home happy.

The RiverDogs picked up their 37th win of the season and are now 37-23 on the year with the Sand Gnats now at 35-25.

Former College of Charleston Cougar and current New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner was in town on a rehab assignment. He batted leadoff and played left field for five innings for the RiverDogs. Gardner went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a single, and came around to score on Culver's homer before leaving the game.

"I felt good," said Gardner. "Obviously, it was exciting to come back here and play in front of the hometown crowd. It's been seven years since I've been here. All in all, I felt pretty good and I'm excited to see where I'm at tomorrow."

The game was scoreless for the first three, but Savannah opened the scoring in the fourth when a single and a double brought up Brian Harrison (1-4, RBI), whose infield single drove in the game's first run. Savannah threatened the next inning, but Gregory Pron was stranded at third after a leadoff triple, as Allen retired the next three in order.

The RiverDogs took the lead in the fifth inning against Jacob DeGrom (1-1), when, after singles by Kelvin De Leon and Gardner, Cito Culver belted his second home run in three days over the right field wall. Culver's blast provided support for Allen's (2-4) outstanding outing. He pitched six innings and allowed just one run on seven hits without walking a batter and struck out five.

Charleston played long ball again in the sixth as Casey Stevenson hit one that cleared the wall in right with a man on for his second home run of the season.

With a four run lead, the RiverDogs bullpen took over in the seventh. Dan Mahoney pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth and Pedro Guerra finished the game with a zero in the ninth.
