Asheville Tourists News Release
With two outs and runners at first and second, Taylor Featherston came to the plate in the bottom of the 11th. Tyler Massey took his lead from second just hoping Featherston could put a base hit through the infield.
After a few pitches, Asheville's second baseman lined a drive right back up the middle into center. Without hesitation Joe Mikulik waved his arms towards home plate as Massey rounded third. The throw to the plate from West Virginia centerfielder Greg Polanco was off line and Massey crossed home plate standing up; giving Asheville a 7-6 walk-off victory.
The Tourists found themselves down 4-0 after two innings as the Power rallied for two runs in both the first and second innings. Sam Mende put the home team on the board with a two-run double in the third. The double was Mende's league-leading 22nd of the season.
In the fifth, Mende brought the Tourists to within one with an RBI groundout and Harold Riggins followed by putting the T's in front. Riggins crushed a two-run Home Run over the right-centerfield wall and Asheville led 5-4 through five. The Tourists are now 36-1 this season when they have the lead after five innings.
West Virginia rallied for two in the top of the sixth to jump back in front. Alen Hanson hit an RBI groundout and Kirk Singer plated a run with a single to left. Brian Humphries drew the Tourists level with an RBI double in Asheville's half of the sixth.
The game remained tied 6-6 all the way to the 11th when the Tourists were finally able to break through. Asheville's bullpen combined to throw five shout-out innings in the win.
The Tourists are 14-1 in their last 15 home games and have a 4.5 game lead in the South Atlantic League's Southern division with nine games left in the first half. Asheville and West Virginia are back at it again tomorrow evening with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05pm.
