Lexington Legends News Release
(GREENSBORO, N.C.) The Lexington Legends collected 15 hits off four Greensboro pitchers on their way to a 6-2 win Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. Eight Legends starters had at least one hit, and third baseman Matt Duffy was 3-for-4, including his 10th home run of the year.
Mike Foltynewicz earned his eighth win of the season against one loss. He worked the first seven innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run, a solo homer in the seventh by John Schultz.
The Legends won despite leaving 14 runners on base.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Lexington's Jordan Scott reached on an infield single with one out, moved to third on a single by Zach Johnson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duffy. The Grasshoppers scored in the bottom half on a two-out single by Brent Keys, a single by Matt Smith and a throwing error by right fielder Justin Gominsky.
The Legends took the lead for good with a run in the top of the second on walks to Mike Kvasnicka and Gominsky and a one-out single by Delino DeShields, Jr.
Duffy's leadoff homer in the top of the third gave the Legends a 3-1 lead that stood until Schultz homered in the bottom of the seventh.
The Legends took a 4-2 lead in the eighth on a walk to Brandon Meredith, a single by Kvasnicka, and a throwing error by shortstop Terrence Dayleg after he fielded Gominsky's grounder.
Lexington extended its lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. Drew Muren doubled, moved to third on Meredith's single and scored on Kvasnicka's double. Jimmy Howick's single scored Meredith with the final run.
The Grasshoppers loaded the bases on three walks in the bottom of the ninth, but Carlos Quevedo relieved Murilo Gouvea and struck out Keys, the South Atlantic League's leading hitter, on a 3-2 breaking pitch to give the Legends the victory.
Greensboro starter Charlie Lowell (3-3) was the losing pitcher.
The two teams meet again Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
