Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (9-11) got shutout for the second time this season on Wednesday night, falling to the West Virginia Power (13-7) by a final of 4-0. It was the first shutout pitched by the Power this year, and the three-game series is now even at one game apiece.
Three West Virginia pitchers combined to complete the shutout for the Power. Starting RHP Dovydas Neverauskas (1-1) limited the Suns to two hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three to earn the win. He was followed by RHP Yeudy Garcia, who went three innings and gave up two hits while striking out three for his second hold of the year. RHP Montana DuRapau pitched the final frame without allowing a hit to close the deal.
Offensively the Power began to slowly build their four-run cushion with a run in the top of the first. With one out 2B Pablo Reyes smacked a double to left. Reyes advanced to third on a fly out to right by 3B Jordan Luplow, and scored from third on a ground ball single up the middle hit by catcher Taylor Gushue.
It was another RBI single that did the damage in the second. With two outs and a runner at second LF Jeff Roy hit a ground ball into right field, driving in 1B Chase Simpson to make it 2-0 West Virginia.
The lead increased to 3-0 in the seventh when RF Michael Suchy led off the frame with a solo shot into the visitor's bullpen in center field for his first homerun of the season. The final run crossed the plate the next inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Luplow.
Starting RHP Luis Reyes (0-2) surrendered two of the four West Virginia runs, and thus got tagged with the loss for the Suns. He went a season-long six innings, giving up the two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one. RHP Mario Sanchez threw the other three innings for Hagerstown, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk while striking out five.
These teams will conclude their three-game series at Municipal Stadium on Thursday April 30. The Suns will send RHP Phillips Valdez (1-1) to the mound for his fourth start of the season. He will square off against RHP Austin Coley (3-0) for West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
