Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds lost 7-5 on Wednesday night in Savannah, as the Sand Gnats rallied with four runs in the seventh inning. The defeat evens the series and forces a rubber match on Thursday evening.
Sebastian Vader kept his streak of quality starts going, surrendering two runs in six innings of work. The runs came off a bases loaded walk in the second inning, and a double play in the third inning.
Delmarva battled back with four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the fourth, Conor Bierfeldt laced a two-run single to tie the game. The Shorebirds took the lead on an RBI double by Alex Murphy, collecting his league-high 21st RBI of the season. Delmarva added to their lead with an RBI grounder by Jonah Heim, leading 4-2 at the seventh inning stretch.
In the bottom of the seventh, Savannah mounted their comeback. The Sand Gnats took advantage of four walks issued by reliever Nick Cunningham, tying the game on a two-run double by John Mora. Garrett Cortright came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out in a 4-4 tie. The Shorebirds' reliever induced two ground balls, but they developed too slowly for an inning-ending double play, bring home two more runs.
Tacking on another run in the eighth, the Sand Gnats took a 7-4 lead into the ninth. The Shorebirds scored one run on an RBI single by Jared Breen. Shane Bay locked down his second save with a strikeout of Jay Gonzalez. Josh Smoker (1-0) earned the win for Savannah, while Cunningham (1-3) took the loss for Delmarva.
The two teams will square off in the series finale on Thursday evening. Left-hander John Means (2-0, 2.25) will go for the series win for Delmarva, while left-hander Brad Wieck (0-3, 3.60) starts for Savannah. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Historic Grayson Stadium.
