Suiter extends hitting streak to 23 in I's loss

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns took advantage of three Intimidators errors to jump out to an early lead and held on to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 7-2, Friday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Michael Suiter went 1-for-4 with a run scored, extending his franchise-record hitting streak to 23 games.

In the first, Hagerstown took a 1-0 lead when Osvaldo Abreu singled, advanced to third on a Jose Marmolejos double and scored on a Luis Martinez wild pitch.

The Suns plated two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 when Raudy Read scored on a Martinez wild pitch, and Wilman Rodriguez singled in Matthew Page.

In the fifth, Hagerstown extended its lead to 6-0 after Alexander Simon dropped what would have been the final out of inning, scoring Abreu from third. After Bryan Mejia had singled home Page from second, he scored on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Plourde while trying to steal third.

Kannapolis plated its first run in the home half the sixth when Toby Thomas singled home Mason Robbins to cut the Suns lead to 6-1.

Hagerstown padded its lead in the seventh, on an RBI double by Read to make it 7-1.

In the home half of the seventh, Suiter extended the his hitting streak by beating out an infield single to short and later scored on a double by Mason Robbins, making it 7-2, but Kannapolis could not mount a comeback in the final two innings.

Luis Martinez was charged with the loss (4-11), working 5.0 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Jeff Howell earned his first professional win (1-0), working a career-high six innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking four.

Brad Salgado and Connor Walsh pitched the final four innings, combining to allow one run on two hits while striking out four.

The Intimidators and Suns continue their three-game series Saturday at Intimidators Stadium Supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Righty Zach Thompson (3-5, 4.59) gets the start against southpaw Connor Bach (5-3 3.21).
