Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Matthew Grimes gave up one run over seven innings and Yermin Mercedes had two hits including a home run while driving in three as Delmarva topped the BlueClaws 8-2 on Friday night at Perdue Stadium.
The win for Delmarva (23-24/56-59) snaps their eight game losing streak and is their 10th win in 13 games against the BlueClaws (27-20/60-55) this year. The BlueClaws saw their three game winning streak snapped in the loss.
Delmarva opened the scoring with a first inning single by Cam Kneeland to take a 1-0 lead, doubling their lead in the second on a groundout by Riley Palmer to score a run.
After a Herlis Rodriguez groundout to score a run in the third, the Shorebirds opened up the margin with two runs in the third, on a home run by Yermin Mercedes, his eighth, third against Lakewood, and a wild pitch that scored Riley Palmer.
Lakewood starter Shane Watson (1-4) came out after four innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Shorebirds blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning off Calvin Rayburn. Yermin Mercedes' two-run double made it 6-1 and then the Shorebirds added two unearned runs against Rayburn to open an 8-1 lead.
Grimes (8-6) came out after seven, allowing one run in matching his longest game of the season.
Jason Zgardowski threw two scoreless innings of relief for the BlueClaws.
Kyle Martin hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot off Mike Burke in the ninth inning, to complete the scoring. Herlis Rodriguez had one of five BlueClaws hits to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
The series with Delmarva continues on Saturday night. RHP Will Morris (4-0) starts for Lakewood against LHP Brian Gonzalez (4-8).
