
Shorebirds End Drought with 8-2 Win

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds ended their losing streak with an 8-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night. The Shorebirds got back into the win column with seven strong innings from starter Matthew Grimes.
The game started quickly for Delmarva, returning to the friendly confines of Perdue Stadium. For the season, Delmarva has posted a 31-26 record at home. Cam Kneeland laced a two-out RBI single in the first inning, and Riley Palmer collected an RBI grounder in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Lakewood scored their only run off Grimes in the third. A walk, single and sacrifice bunt set up an RBI grounder for Herlis Rodriguez. Grimes finished his day with a career-high seven innings, one run allowed on five hits. Grimes eventually recorded his eight victory, matching John Means for the team lead in wins.
Yermin Mercedes led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, overtaking Conor Bierfeldt for the team lead in long balls. Palmer doubled and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 score. Mercedes and Palmer were at it again in the fifth, each contributing run-scoring doubles in a four-run rally for a 8-1 lead. Palmer has ripped four doubles in five games since returning from the disabled list.
Kyle Martin hit a solo home run in the ninth for Lakewood, but the result was no longer in doubt. Mike Burke retired six of the seven batters he faced in relief, finishing off the 8-2 final.
The Shorebirds will go for a series victory on Saturday night in Salisbury, Md. Left-hander Brian Gonzlaez (4-8, 5.47) will start opposite right-hander Will Morris (4-0, 2.01) for Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
